I've got an older JD650 w/ a front/mid PTO. I've not used this PTO in about 1.5 years (I've been mowing w/ a 3 pt. mounted mower instead). Anyway, I mounted the belly mower today and went to engage the front pto and got an awful squealing sound. It sounded a bit like a squealing belt, but then I thought maybe the clutch in the PTO may be slipping? The PTO worked fine last time I used it about 1.5 years ago. The PTO works fine w/ nothing attached to it, but as soon as I connect the mower, it squeals. The mower blades & gearbox turn freely, so I don't believe that's the problem.
Is there any kind of adjustment to the clutch on the PTO, or is there anything else I can check? I'm at a loss here.
Thanks.

Is that an electric clutch? on many used there are air gaps..Could it not be that the idler is tight and the belt is slipping? ....

If this pto clutch is an electric clutch, check to see if it has gotten oil soaked or wet. They will behave like you described in this condition. Either that or a previously said, a loose or slipping belt. ....

I had a JD 650, that is a Electric clutch.
Your problem could very well be belt. Or rust has gotten in the clutch not letting it ingage fully. Check your belt.
spray clutch and brake cleaner in the clutch. and see what
happens after that. Keep us posted. ....

I believe the clutch is like the 750. The clutch is similar to one used on a cars air conditioning unit. It is mounted on the front of the crankshaft. I would wonder if it was rust on the clutch bearing surface. Certainly any oil or antifreeze on the clutch could be a problem.
Are you sure the front drive belt is not the problem I would think it would be difficult to know where the noise is coming from. ....

Hey everyone, thanks for the feedback. As it turns out, it was the lower drive pulley (or sheave as JD calls it) on the PTO which was the culprit. The pulley is a double-belt pulley with a splined hub to slide onto and drive the splined shaft of the front PTO. The splines on the pulley where worn down and caused the pulley to slip when under load. I replaced the pulley and problem solved. The pulley cost $110, which seems steep for a pulley, but I guess it could have been worse.
I'm not sure what caused the splines to wear down? My dealer said he's seen this one other time. The shaft is fine, as that's hardened steel. I guess after 25 years of use, something's bound to wear down... ....
