We have commented on the stability of the JD dealers in the past well the large dealer of JD and Kubota just folded. They had more than one lot in MS and a lot of stock.

Markets continually adjust, attitides do to! For what ever reason a company made some adjustments. It not only affects the customers, but the employees have to find new jobs, possibly move to stay in there fields of expertise. Some might stay in the area and do what they have been only with a diffferent shingle out front. ....

One of our 'local' dealers closed 3 or 4 years ago, it was small family run place, great service and advice, but they couldn't compete in todays market, the city was moving closer and most of their retail was lawn & garden then Home depot opened and that was gone too.

The older of the two mechanics from the former dealership put up a steel building next to his house, bought the parts inventory on consignment from the family, hired the 'other' mechanic from the dealer and hung out his own shingle. There is now 4 mechanics going full-time and people come from quite a distance to get work done, last year they put a service truck on the road and it is now booked weeks in advance for service on large peices.

Of course the fact that they only charge 65% of the shop rate at the next closest dealer doesn't hurt either.

Best of luck. ....

A Harley Davidson dealership is given a quota of motorcycles to sell. Each month a number of new bikes are received and if the previous month's allotment aren't sold, they are overstock. In areas where the economy is down, it's difficult to sell and eventually the dealer is taken over or closes it's door. I don't know if this is the case with the tractor dealers. I know that JD and other manufacturers are giving zero percent financing which tells me that there's more supply than demand. If they still can't sell their products, they'll have to start with the rebates. And IF that doesn't work...then it's "goodby". ....

There are a lot of things that go on with the succesion of a dealership. First is there anyone? Is there a desire to work till you are dead? I often say there are three ways to get out, you die, you look good enough that someone buys you out, or you have a auction and hold your hand on your, huh and pray. Attitude is the most important part of buisness and when you lose it you'd better get out or you will be put out. There is not enough machinery out there right now in the brands we sell. Much of our lots are nearly empty and we are spending a lot of time looking for machines at other dealers and trying to get more out of the factories in a short period of time. As always not all is selling as good as another piece but there is still a lot of movement. They are still offering low interest and waivers when it might take 90 days for us to get it to deliver. They used to stop it as soon as inventories leveled off and they only did it to get rid of excess inventories, but they have not done it this year. ....

Word is that the dealer was not passing funds on to Deere. A typical tactic when you have a cash short fall. Another Deere dealer is going to buy it out already so it must have been a profitable dealership at some point. They started adding tractor trucks lately it became a bit like trying to cover all the bases. You tie a lot of money up in stock with large trucks. Most are custom otders so? ....

We had a family dealer in Syracuse a few years back who's son built a new house out of profits. Turned around ten years later he was writing bogus contracts and sales on machines to cover a gambling problem. The companies just came in and locked up the property. The father was a great man, as well as the one son. Just the other one thought he should be living a little higher. To bad to see so many lives affected negatively by one individuals action. ....

There was a JD dealer in Sacramento, Ca area that had a bunch of Gators, back hoes and lots of other implements on his lot. He finally went belly up a couple of years ago. I heard that Deere keep sending him more inventory but he could move his inventory, lost everything and is now working for another dealer. ....
