I purchased a new Long "LongTrac" 520 in September, love that tractor! I understand they are now part of Escort tractors and may discontinue some of the LongTrac models next year. I read where the 680 is the only model that will pass evro. specs. Is any of this correct? I see that the web page I used to visit is now only for Dealers. But I have not been able to find any press releases on the web yet.

Long has never been anything but a marketing co. for anything they wanted to sell, Leyland, UTB(Long Trac),LZ, Escorts, and if memory serves, Zetor. The Romanians have sending precious few tractors, only able to turn out a few handdfuls a year in comparision.. A good, tractor though. Dealers fight to get what there is. I have heard at times the plant shuts down many times due to lack of coal, fuel electricity etc. It is a old fiat designed tractor. The Romanians do not have the resources and technology to freshen up or even redesign the tired old workhorse. Escorts(Farm Trac) wants a piece of the pie and is pushing Long AgBus into their way of thinking. My Indian sources tell me that Escorts is ripe for co. merger and takeover. If this is true, a possible buyer: Larsen&Toubro ltd of India who are producing a well KNOWN green tractor. Or Mahindra who is 2x's size of Escorts ....

Hey Mark,
I have to disagree with you on the UTB scene. Just last week I saw the new updated tractors. Very nice looking sloping hoods, flat deck operator's station and side mounted gear shifters. Never heard of a shortage of Universals either up here. ....

Woodbeef,
This business is all about mergers and takeovers. Because you have some prominent dealers in your area or see a lot full of tractors has nothing to do with what goes on behind the scenes and overseas.
The UTB's that Long sells are on the way out. They can only get one to meet 04 emmisions. It will stay for now thanks to Perkins. ....

Well Mark, nice try at defelction of my point, but it ain't gonna wash. Like I said there are new model Universals out,and if there was a shortage of tractors I'm sure there would not be very many sitting around now would there be? Will someone buy UTB,who knows they are one of the dwindling members of the independant tractor manufacturers ranks!
As for Escorts, they already own 50% of Long Agribusiness LLC,and are getting more of it from what I'm hearing. Unless they bring in mfd models of the Farmtrac,I can not see Long dropping the UTB offerings. Oh ya,as for emmissions, they'll come up with something for it. They have no choice, the Euro Tier system seems to be stricter than the EPA regs. ....

Woodbeef,
I hate to argue but since it is important to your agenda, I just happenend to have a lengthy discussion with the Head honcho for Farmtrac not more than 5 days ago. UTB is on the way out. The Indians are wanting further development of their product line and don't want the competition from their own family product line. ....

Mark,
So then is Escorts going to bring in their mfd tractors that they have running around Eastern Europe? They better if they drop the UTB offerings. If not I think they'll loose alot of customers to Mahindra with their new "00" series in mfd.
Oh,ya I talked to Universal yesterday about emission compliant engines and the new models. It seems that they a have both 3 and 4 cylinders that are compliant already. Another thing I was thinking about with Universal, they sell in many more markets than Escorts does world wide. So I guess they would have to spread production out over a larger marketplace. ....

I saw the Longs at the National Farm Machinery Show as well. They had two LongTracs displayed, one of which is sporting the new LongTrac logo and colors. The color is the purplish color like the LandTrac series.
Escorts announced in Oct. 2002 that they were buying out their partner in Long Agribusiness L.L.C, Alverez & Marcell, Inc., of the remaining 51%. ....
