Thanks in advance for any help. I am retiring my old 601 Workmaster and going to purchase a new tractor. I want to get a John Deere 3120 with a eHydro transmission. This tractor has a 22HP PTO rating. Will this be enough to handle my 5' Woods cutter?

Good question: I was working on this problem on the post concerning PTO and HST. My 955 will move a 6 ft HD in regular grass, but it is 32 HP and 27 PTO, but I would not want to do it all the time or in the woods. Therefore I was looking for something a little stouter.
Like the BushHog the Woods mowers increase HP requirement with heavier mowers. The 5' light is 25HP and the 5ft medium is 30 HP requirements. I assume that is gross HP not PTO. You need a good 25 PTO for the medium duty cutter. Deere recommends only the light unit.
This is what started the other post. The older hydrostat drives you lost about 5 HP on the PTO. The newer designs are more like 8 HP. This means you can not run a 5' medium duty rotory mower on the 30 HP tractors (according to specs). With the pounding a mower takes I would not go to a light 5 ft unit unless you have no brush only grass. ....

Not sure where I learned this but it sticks in my mind as 4.5 pto hp per each foot of bush hog, I think thats minimum pto hp. So use this info. for what its worth:)

I pull a medium duty JD MX5 5' cutter with 25 pto hp and it does fine. I'd think 22 hp with a light duty cutter would work, but you may need to slow down a bit in the heavy stuff. ....

You should be OK with a 5' mower.
I ran a 5' brush mower on my JD 850 ( 22 PTO HP).
It ran it fine most of the time. I would have to go slow in higher, really thick/heavy grass.
