I had a '77 Datsun 280Z that had that problem and needed to be overhauled at 50,000 miles. Datsun said it was poor maintenance and severe driving conditions. Back in those days, I changed oil every 2000 miles, changed air filters frequently and never even drove on a gravel driveway let alone a gravel road. The 2 paint jobs and all the bondo work at 3 years and 5 years of ownership is what really got to me. Never again! ....

Those old Datsuns had some real body and paint problems. A friend bought a brand new 260Z and it was less than a year old when the green metallic paint started chalking up badly. ....

I have always believed that engine sludge is primarily an oil problem. Even the cited report says use of synthetics can take care of the problem.

I have had three higher mileage engines engines opened up in the last 20 years that were run on synthetic oils. One had 97,000, the second had 77,000 and the third had 65,000 miles.

Each one was as bright and clean inside as the day it was made. ....

I became a believer in synthetics back in the late 70's. I bought a new VW Scirocco and ran SL-1 synthetic oil in it from 10k miles on. At 110k miles a head gasket blew due to cranking up the turbo boost too high (my hot rod days). When I pulled the head I was astonished at how clean it was. The machine marks on the cam were still visible. No wear whatsoever, and none of that brown varnish was present. I have used synthetics ever since (on equipment I care about anyway). ....

I've found all engines run different. Some seem to have different things that make them run better. There are some poor motor and hydraulic oils out there that in some engines you might just as well add the water. On the other side of some warrantee claims a friend called me one day and asked me to stop by where he works. They had a police cruiser in there with 2800 miles on it with a major sludge problem and a shot engine! The car took drives around the compound or stayed running at an idle 24-7 and it was only in service less then 90 days! ....
