in my experience with kubota. when you get them hot the head cracks right between the valves. But this is not always the case. Where was it smoking? Plus the fact that your system was dry means that there is another underling problem with your coolant system. Is it still under warranty? If it is you might be able to get it covered do to that fact that is was loosing coolant with out your knowledge. How long was it since you last checked the level? If it was less than a week you definitely have a good case. ....

If it smoked white when it was warm it's likely steam and that would be a problem. With the rad cap off, if there was a geyser of coolant when the engine caught that is further evidence of a problem. If there wasn't geyser and you could see bubbles in the coolant, that's a problem but a lesser one. If the thermostat weren't opening then the upper rad hose wouldn't be hot when the engine was.
I'm writing all this in the past tense since trying there's a small risk of further damage in trying to start the engine. If coolant goes into a cylinder and the engine is cranked a hydro-lock can result, which could break various things. I'd make sure it turned over by hand before trying to start it or maybe remove the injectors or glow plugs.
I might drain all the coolant out and measure how much it takes to refill it just to make sure it's filling completely.

Let us know what the dealer finds. This is not a good thing and it does bring us to the checks that should be done on a regular basis for the good of the equipment we use. ....

Thanks for the useful replies. The tractor is not under warranty -- and it had been about a month since I last checked the coolant. I was not present for witness the smoke. I have since started the tractor, and the coolant just bubbles in the overflow reservoir while the temp guage rises. I am no mechanic, so am hesitant to try to do any fix myself for fear of making things worse. That being said, I might try to drain and flush the cooling system to see if that helps.

My guess is it is a head gasket. I think it would have seized first and since it didn't ......that is good. The 64,000 dollar question is where did the anti-freeze all go in the first place???? ....

If you were regularly checking your oil and noticed no contamination from the potentially leaking coolant the coolant could have been escaping in the combustion chamber and exiting the exhuaust. Sorry to hear about your Kubota. Could be a cracked/warped head as already mentioned or the head gasket as you stated or a combination of both. Hopefully no damage was done to the pistons or cylinder wall(s) where any leaks may have occured. It ain't gonna be cheap but hopefully not the worst of scenarios. Good luck with it. ....

hope for only a gasket, there only $42.00. a new head is $724.00. if it's cracked i'd see if a local machine shop could weld it up, then trade. what was he doing? diesels usually only over heat when overworked, maybe he needs a larger tractor. ....

He was trying to be nice and was cutting a large field of grass when I was at work. His hearing is bad, so I suspect that he had the trottle cranked up on the mistaken impression that the gas pedal on a tractor works like the pedal on a car -- the more the push down the higher the engine revs. He also managed to run over one of my peach trees on the same day, but that is another story. Again, thanks for the helpful replies. I am still waiting for the dealer to pick up the tractor, so it looks like I will be doing a bit of push mower work this weekend. ....
