I have been in a quandry trying to make up my mind over a JD 4410 or a Kubota 3430 or 3830. What made you decide on the 3830? ....

I found I like something about all of the top three, Deere, NW and Kubota. I liked how Kubota was set up, its features and finally the price. 38 hp was a sweet spot for me. ....

I'm currently looking between the L/30 series and the deere 4410/4610/4710. I really like the kubotas, and there seems to be good value there. The resale on them in my area is very good.
Is there a sweet spot in the L series for price/performance. It seems like the next 5 hp is always just a little bit more...
I'm looking to maintain a long gravel/pit run driveway, do some of the dirt work on my house, possibly trench and/or till, and once a year brush hog a good part of my 50 acres. Cleaning corrals will be a given, but everything I've looked at will do that fine. What implements are most useful (back blade, box blade?) for road work and general grading?
I was initially looking at the 3130, which is about 19k with the 723 FEL, and also the 5030, which is about 26k with the FEL (We were talking in ballpark numbers). How much wiggle room does my dealer have off of these numbers? Is there a medium between these where there is perhaps better bang for the buck? I'm looking at the hydro models. For comparison, the eHydro 4610 without FEL is being quoted at 25, plus 3900 for the loader.
That said, I plan on driving the wheels off of this, and plan on living in this particular house that I'm building for a very very long time. Hence erring on the side of a bit more HP. I'm comfortable with the size of the L30's, although the 2910 was nimble...

Regarding price negotiation, I think the general rule of thumb is 10-20% off MSRP. However there are wide variations in this around the country. If a particular brand or model is hot in your area the dealer is unlikely to discount - why should he if he can sell it for list? Once you negotiate your best price you can ask the dealer to throw stuff in - like free pickup and delivery for service, or a free 50 hour service, or free filters and fluids, or ???
You may know that comparing the L3130 and the JD 4610 is comparing apples and oranges, but that wasn't apparent from your post. The 3130 is mid-frame model and the 4610 has a larger frame. The 3130 is more comparable to the JD 4310 I think. ....

HuckMeat,
What about a Kubota 3830 with the 723 Fel.
Size and price should put it somewhere in the middle of the 3130 and 5030.
I looked one over a couple months ago, very nice machine. ....

Yeah, I was thinking the 3830 might be a good midpoint.
I know I'm comparing lots of different beasts. The JD guy really thinks I need the 4610... It's a beautiful machine, but then I look at something like the 4410, which seems to be a pretty solid little rig, and he shrugs and says oh, that one is only 2k less... Methinks he really wants to sell the bigger tractor (which he doesn't have on his lot)... Oddly.
One more newbie question. I've decided to probably just rent backhoes for a while, what do I need in the rear for loader work. A ballast box, wheel weights, a box blade? What is good bang for the buck. I think I'd start using a box blade from the start with the road and grading work I have, would it double as ballast for loader work? Are wheel weights the way to go, or tubed ca? Are these the kind of goodies I can get my dealer to throw in?
Thanks again. I upgraded today just because there is such a mass of quality answers and good information. ....

I loaded my rear tires with winshield washer fluid for ballast.( No tubes).
A boxblade for additional ballast would help and be usefull for your grading.

Art & Tractor gurus,
A bit more thinking - I have a lot of good sized rocks that I will probably want to move around and landscape with. Is this an acceptable job for a loader, provided caution and common sense is utilized? If so, I was thinking I might ought to bump up just a bit to a 4330, to get into the 853 loader. All the talk about critters had me thinking too...
I'm going to talk to another Kub dealer tommorow, just to get a feel for what these different dealers can offer. For a reference, what might I expect for a
L4330, 853FEL, a backhoe (yeah, I know, $$!) and a box blade and posthole digger. I know the posthole digger and blade are cheap relative to the rest, hoping I can get some kind of break. I'm in a higher cost geography in general, but wanted to know what MSRP would be, and perhaps, what a fantastic deal would be. I've not been able to sit in a 4610 yet, but I really liked the fit with the L series for me. Also, what should I expect to pay for wheel weights (tires filled too??) and are their other upgrades I should look into now. (Hydraulic top link for the box blade?? - For that matter, what tractors do come with a hyd top link?)
Thanks again!
John ....

I don't know if any come with a hydraulic top link, but you can add one to almost any tractor. You might look into a top-n-tilt kit which will add hydraulic fore-aft and left-right angling of the implements. It's especially great if you have hills to deal with. It's been said that once you use top-n-tilt you'd never want to be without.
Be sure to sit and drive the 4610 before signing. Speaking for myself, I was much more comfortable on the JD. ....

Thanks Chief! I'm not sure how the 4610 becomes a 25k tractor without a loader. We were adding loader controls and the power to go package to add a backhoe, and I was at 36k, but he would do a 33k "package" (loader, backhoe, tractor)... He's a nice guy though. I may cruise up the highway and try to find a 4610 to drive today.
A lot of my buddies work for Deere in Iowa, but mostly doing things like trying to figure out how to make the new oil filter 0.03 cheaper than the last one. I wonder if they get discounts? :) ....

If you can't find a Deere dealer willing to deal then your choice is made. My experience was that after negotiation Kubota and JD were so close in price that my decision was based on other issues.

When it comes to adding a backhoe to a L-series the BH-90 is probably the best looking hook-up out there in it's class. There is no subframe hanging way below the tractor making the ground clearence about the same as a BX like with some models. They use a four point hookup like on the Commercial duty L-35, L-48 TLB. The frame keeps it tight and it also keeps it high so it's not going to be difficult to put on a trailer or load on a truck. By keeping it that tight to the tractor it has less leverage against the tractor chassis. ....

Hi, I noticed your comment about cleaning out stalls. I was doing some grading work in my new barn, getting ready for concrete next week, and I was using a buddies L35 with a box blade on the back. It was mighty tight. I have been thinking about a new 3130 but after this week I might go with a little smaller package for ease of use. I have also considered the Branson as an option because there is so much bang for the buck. No hydro but a 40 hp with a 2000lb FEL would get most of my work done. They have a Cummins private label diesel and the tractor comes from the same factory that builds NH and some Deere models. $16400. leaves enough for beer and skittles and implements! ....

DPWeston, this is something the dealer should do for you, I would expect included with the purchase price or at least a very discounted cost to have this done. Ask the dealer and see what they say if you haven't already. ....
