Looking at purchasing a used 2001 f350 2-door w/ 8' utility body. Truck is not dually. Truck has 6.8L v10 EFI with 100,000 miles. Seems well maintained but have never owned this engine before and do not know what type of milage or life to expect? Any comments on milage? life expectancy beyond 100,000 miles? not sure yet if 3.73 or 4.10? Should I have a preference? Will only tow light on occasion.

I don't know anything about a Ford V10, but a friend of mine recently traded his Dodge V10. I never drove a pickup whith so much power, but his best mileage was between 5 and 6 MPG. With two dollar gas you'd have to have a real need for that much power. Maybe Ford V10's get better mileage than his Dodge, so I'd sure ask around before I bought the truck. Just my thoughts, Frank. ....

Frank/Hardwood. Thanks for your comments. This is what I was afraid of with mileage. I figure if I can get 10 MPG+ I would buy it. If I am going to be in the 5-6 MPG range like your friends Dodge, that is not really what I want. Thanks again. Rick ....

Hydralux,
Just traded an '01 F-250 V10 on a new F-250 diesel. Nothing wrong with the truck whatsoever. Bought it new and had zero problems. Just needed a tax break and took advantage of several Ford incentives on the new one. My road mileage (a trip per year to Myrtle Beach) averaged about 17mpg. In and around town average was about 11.5mpg. Pulling my 4610 back and forth to the dealer for service and pulling a cattle trailer average was in the 7-8mpg range. Go for it!

Yes, you can write off the enitre purchase price (or difference) the first year for small businesses. This applies to trucks with 6000# GVW and over. Also, there was rebate or low financing, loyal Ford customer, military appreciation, futher discounts with Ford Credit type incentives.

I run a 2002 F350 single wheel with a service body. It is not loaded real heavy and I can get 14 mpg on the highway. Around town is 9 - 10 mpg. It is extremely smooth running and plenty of power. I think I have the 3.73 gears. No engine problems to date. ....

jdgreen,
Thanks for your help. Before I bought the truck I checked the VIN to find that it is geared 3.73. Sound like we both own the same truck now. Mileage so far seems consistent with exactly what you are getting. Thanks again, Rick ....

I recently purchased an 02 with this engine. It is a dually but I don't think the mileage difference would be significant. I get about 10 mpg around town and when I am not towing, 12 on highway. Drops to 9.5 when towing a 34' fifth wheel with GVWR of 9200 lbs.
Good thing I didn't buy it for mileage! ....
