I've heard previous discussions on the battery problems associated with the 790's. The factory battery is leaking out of the battery and onto the tractor. Does anyone have any input on why this happens and is there a replacement unit that won't leak in the group 45 size? I pulled the battery out and want to correct the problem before the acid is drawn into the radiator and causes some real damage. Any comments would be appreciated.

Yep, an Optima or similar AGM battery is the way to go. Check your cranking amps to make sure the replacement has enough power. ....

I recently looked for an Optima D51R sealed battery for my JD 790. I called the number on the Optima web site and was told the government had bought them all and that none would be available for three months. The price was around $170.
I subsequently discovered the Orbital sealed battery by Exide for about $86. I was able to buy one locally and after cleaning the battery compartment, I installed it this morning. It works fine. The JD specs call for 500 cold cranking amps and the Orbital delivers 700 CCA. ....

I ordered my battery through these guys. They were very helpful in finding alternative batteries for the odd ball battery Deere uses in the 4410 and their prices were very competitive as well. ....

The Exide/Orbital sealed battery I bought is Model # ORB78DT-84. The price was $86.60 plus tax. They thoughtfully engineered the terminals on the battery centerline so that regardless of which way the battery has to be turned to get the polarity right, the distance is the same for the cables. It also has side terminals. In the case of the JD 790, the distance for the cables is a little less than that for the factory installed battery. By the way, the other day I noticed JD sells sealed replacement batteries. There's no telling what they cost! Armed with what I know now, if purchasing a new CUT, I would ask for the sealed battery as a condition of purchase. ....

Thanks Runskikeadeere, I just picked up a new Orbital 78DT-84 for my JD 790. Price was 99.89 but a guy at the parts store said he had put one in his tractor and was happy with it. Should be all ready to go as soon as the weather warms up. Norm ....
