A while ago I had a wire torn out by a stick while using the brush chopper. To reduce the chance of a repeat occurence, I bolted a piece of 3/4 inch plywood to the underside the tractor. (See my pics 19 and 20). I started with a 2'x2' piece of plywood and kept cutting until I could make it fit. It should reduce the chances of getting another stick in the wires - but will not be as good as the rental upgrade kit. But this was cheap to make.

nchrunch32; Not a thing wrong with good ole yankee ingenuity. I had a stick or something pull the wire off the PTO soelnoind on the 4410 while doing high grass work in a road ditch last summer, it had me puzzled for a bit when the PTO stoped. I called the service rep at the dealership, this must happen more often than I thought as he told me what was wrong, and had me going in a couple minutes. I too checked into the rental upgrade. I don't know for sure what all comes with it but it did seem pretty expensive. If I have time next spring I may try a piece of ply myself. Happy Holidays. Frank. ....

We do a lot of bush hogging in the course of doing our work, especially early on, a lot of the property we are working on is former farms that have been dormant for several years by the time we get to them.
One of the best tricks we have come up with for protecting the underside is using the FEL itself. We put the bottom of the bucket flat to the ground and set it up about a foot off the ground. Any brush, limbs, fence wire rolls or rocks get hit by the bucket before the tractor gets there.

Thru the years I've seen plenty of ideas on skid plates. Keep it detachable! To make it easy to clean what might land on top and become a problem. Make sure that it won't just direct more debris to be able to hit vital parts. I've seen logs jambed on top of the backhoe subframe between the tractors actually causing the tractor to get stuck. ....

ncrunch32 that is a very good low cost idea. I suspect that you have already looked at but was turned off by the price of the skid plate kit. Just in case you were not aware; John Deere sells a skid plate kit for around $315. I ordered one for my 4410 and kwschumm has one on his too. I have not installed mine yet as the entire MMM system must be removed to install it and it cannot be used with the skid plate kit installed.
Looks like you are money ahead with your kit. ....

I almost forgot. That part # is LVB25453 and it lists for $385.20 but the Deere website listed it for $312 when purchased with the tractor. My buddy Ricky at the parts counter sold it to me for $312 about 3 months ago. ....

Thanks everyone for your replies. Art, I agree that I should watch this carefully. It is easy to take off - I will do that periodically. Yooper, yep - painting would be a good idea - maybe black to match the underside of the tractor. 2ndHand - yes I went to the dealer to ask about the rental upgrade. Murf, when I ripped the wire out I was chopping a row of brush that was too high (getting rid of a brush pile) so I was too aggressive. Hardwood - yep its a simple solution but not perfect.
2ndHand, my dealer is frustrating - he was talking me out of buying the rental kit - he said he never heard of anyone needing it - they are always busy and rushed - they sell millions of lawnmowers. Plus it was expensive and came with more parts than you needed. So I just dropped the idea of getting the kit. ....
