I have it narrowed down to 2 box scrappers and they both are woods. There is only a 50 dollar price difference so it boils down to what my tc40 mfd will handle and the floating tailgate vs fixed tailgate. Here are some important specs.
Standard Medium
1/4" end plates 3/8" end plates
572# 660#
fixed tailgate floating hinged tail gate
72" 72"
hp 0-45 hp 40-70
medium duty also has this > 1/2" wear plates welded to
inside lower edge of end plate
for a full 3/4" protection at
point of greatest wear.
Structural gussets
1.So with my tractor being at the low end of the hp range, do you think I will be pushing it with the med. duty?
2.Will the extra 100 pounds help me or hurt me in rough field work?
3. Please, will someone explain the benifits (or the detriments) of a floating tailgate?
My decision will be based on your opinions and answers, and I will be confirming this purchase tomarrow night so if you have any input PLEASE give it to me soon.

You won't have to worry about having enough hp for the medium duty. I have a medium duty six footer that works fine and my tractor has less power than the TC40. I'm not sure on the fixed vs. floating tailgate issue. ....

The swingin tail gate has me at bay here. I cant figure out what the benifit of it would be, then again I never used or even saw a box blade before this year.
If the power isssue is really a non issue may be I should go with the medium duty since I like the idea of heavier wall thickness. ....

Sorry if my explanations about hinged rear cutters are confusing. The basic idea is that a fixed rear cutter can interfere with the front blade and a hinged model allows it to swing up and out of the way.
For example, if you extend the top-link to decrease the cut too much with a fixed model the box rolls onto the back of the rear cutter and lifts the front blade off the surface. There's dragging but no cutting. That limits the fine work that can be done. In addition, with heavy cuts in soft soil, even with the top-link shortened, the cut can only go so deep before the rear blade comes down on the back side of the cut and the blade can't go deeper. A hinged model can make short shallow excavations with fewer passes because the box of a fixed model may not fill completely in a short pass.
However, I'm not sure it's really much of an issue. I doubt that the work done by myself as well as many homeowners really needs the fairly subtle advantages of a hinged model. ....

If you don't have a hydraulic top link, the floating tailgate would not be money well spent. Spend the $s on a well built unit. Since 3-point blades all "float", the weight determines how well they will cut. If you need to cut compacted clays, and gravely clays, the added weight will help. ....

For the 50 bucks more and the extra 90# I will go with the medium duty instead of the standard. I will e-mail my dealer today and add that to my ever growing delivery list. Thanks alot. ....
