What color smoke? Does it dissipate in the air quickly like steam or hang for a long time? Does it always smoke, or only when cold, hot or on hot start? Any oil in the coolant? Does the oil have any fuel or water droplets in it?

Regarding my tc55da, the smoke coming from the crankcase vent tube is gray, does not dissipate but creates a cloud of smoke around the tractor, it happens as soon as tractor starts and remains the same, hot or cold. There is no oil in the coolant, there is no water in the oil. When I remove the oil fill cap while running there is a huge pulsating escape of smoke under pressure and an very audible upper engine clattering noise which is not noticeable with oil fill cap on. ....

Sounds like a broken ring or rings, or bad head gasket. Just a guess. ....

I'm with EW, but a compression test on a diesel can be more involved and more dangerous due to higher pressures. You need to use the procedure appropriate to your engine. ....
