Kubota B6200 hydro trans free wheels

My B6200 trans has started to act up it will drive for awhile then just stop and move again momentarily more so when the oil is warm and when going down hill it will freewheel until you stop with the brakes and then it will take seconds before it will drive again. has anyone any ideas I tried changing the oil filter and cleaning the screens but it made no difference. Is my trans shot or what thanks for any help anyone can give

GaryD,

Your hydraulic pump could be shot, but I'd start with a few basic checks before writing it off.

I assume that you've checked the fluid level, and you've made sure that it's full. If so, when was the last time you changed your fluid? It's possible that your fluid has some water in it, due to condensation, or contamination. If not water, maybe your hydraulic fluid is contaminated with something else......possibly the wrong oil type.

If you haven't changed your hydraulic fluid, (this should be done every 600 hours) please do that first. When you change your fluid, be sure to replace the filter and the screen, at the same time. If your fluid was contaminated, you don't want the contaminated filter to ruin your fresh batch of oil.

There should be a screen in your suction line. If that screen is plugged up, you'll lose hydraulic power......and you'll soon destroy your pump. Make sure that screen isn't plugged up. I suggest replacing it right away.

If these things don't seem to solve the problem, then we need to go into other possible problems. However, don't immediately assume that your pump is shot.

Joel

Garydc; Your symptoms tell me that your hydro pump is being starved for fluid, as long as they aer never ran dry for more than a few seconds at a time they rarely fail. I'm not familliar with how Kubota feeds their hydro pump with fluid from the sump. Some systerms have a charge pump located in the bottom of the sump to feed fluid up to the hydro pump. If this is their design then the charge pump could be failing for some reason to provide enough fluid to sastify the main hyro pump. If the main hydro pump is fed by a suction tube from the sump then other possabilitys exist. The number one possibility is that a seal or "O" ring has failed and is letting air into the tube breaking th suction from the sump to the pump, or something is blocking the end of the tube. Lots of other things can be wrong too, but those are the ones that first come to mind. Frank.

You won't be able to tell Jack till you get the most critical check done, a system pressure check.

It could be something as simple as a $0.05 spring broken in the main system pressure relief valve, or some crud holding it open for that matter.

The fact that it gets worse when the fluid is warm (and therefore less viscous) tells me it is a fluid and or pressure loss problem. If your pump was shot it wouldn't work, period.

Franks idea of an obstruction or O ring failure are possibilities too, but in all the machines that have come my way I've never seen it. You have to really starve a pump to get it hot enough to do anything significant to them, there's always a little oil left in there for lube and cooling.

Best of luck.

All good ideas and thoughts here on the problem. Does it free wheel going forward down the hill as well as backwards? We sometimes find suction lines for the pump with a bad o-ring that might cause some of the described problems. Pressure testing now might save help with damage control for more money and parts.

Gary,

Thank you for writing in and keeping us informed.

The pump, itself, is usually the last thing on the list to be considered suspect. It's not unusual for a pump to fail, but it's not a very common. In 9 out of 10 cases, there is something else wrong.

I look forward to hearing from you again, once you get the tractor back.

Joel

thanks for all your tips, it turned out that the charge pump was broken, still operating but not pumping a sufficient supply of oil for the tractor to operate properly. should be back in operation tomorrow.
Gary
