JD 990 with only 30 hours. On ignition, the temperature guage needle moves clockwise all the way beyond the red zone and remains off scale. Coolant level is OK and the radiator cap is not hot to touch. Have tried several re-starts and have engaged the PTO chipper/shredder attachment for 30 minutes without any excessive heating of the radiator. Seems like an electrical issue. No other malfunction on the instrument cluster. What is the most likely cause of this?

It might be interesting to disconnect the temperature sending unit and see if the gauge stays where it is or drops to zero. If it drops to zero my guess would be a bad sending unit. Or maybe the wire to the sending unit is shorted to ground. ....
