I own a JD 870 and the rear tires are 64 inches across. Would you recommend a 5ft or 6ft rotary cutter? I am afraid the 6ft would be a little too much for my size tractor. Would it be a problem that the mower is slightly narrower than the rear tires?
I am considering the John Deere LX series of cutter or the Rhino SE series. The Rhino brand is slightly cheaper. Any experience with either brand?

To some extent it depends on what you're cutting, but my guess is a 5-footer on that machine would be best. I have a JD MX-5 medium duty cutter that is built like a tank, but it's a step up from the LX series. I don't know anything about Rhino's. ....

You'd should be ok with the LX6, or the equivelent Rhino. Both are good implements, but the price difference may not be what you think. The JD includes saftey chains, extras on the Rhino, and make sure you get the slip clutch. ....

I would say it depends on what you're cutting. I had a 1050 and recently downsized to a 4310. Both have had little problem using my 5' brush cutter (an old HD Ford) or with my 6' Bush Hog brand finishing mower. Once in a while if I'm using the finishing mower in high grass like a field I'll have to slow down a bit with the 4310 which should be comparable to your 870 PTO power. ....
