 Ford 930A Gearbox

i have a 930A mower. the adjusting bolts that held the gearbox down rusted and broke. in order to replace i need to remove pullys from the gearbox shaft. they are siezed beyond belief. so i either need a new gearbox and torch the end of the shaft to get the assembly apart. or torch the pully and try that way. does anyone know where i could get replacements for either the gearbox or pully?

Dieseltech,

Rather than torch the pulleys off, put a little heat to the area surrounding the shaft, then tap the pulley with a light hammer several times. This is usually enough to break them loose.

A little heat applied to the pulley will cause it to expand just a fraction of inch, allowing it to break free from the shaft.

If that doesn't work, you can place a heavy bar of steel against the pulley and then hit that hunk of steel with an air chisel. The rapid vibrations will usually break the pulley loose from the shaft. You should then be able to remove the pulley with a puller.

Don't torch the pulley. It'll come off with a little heat and vibration applied.

When Joel is saying little heat he does not mean a little hand help propane torch for soldering copper lines. He is referring to more than that. Been there, tryied that. Welding/cutting torch heat works. You need to heat the pully and not the shaft and heat it all around the shaft. Also large gear puller with rust penetrating oil may work. Don't forget, heated pully will be hot to handle. Been there also. kt
