Any opinions on the 28hp 6284 vs the 23hp smaller 5234? Both come with 60" deck, but the 5234 is $4000 less. It seems both are good buys for using as a mower, and a FEL. I don't know if the extra power and top speed would make the 6284 worth the extra bucks. I like the small turning radius of the 28hp model, much better than the competitors.

The 6000 series is new this year, but I'm sure its very similar to last years 7254 series (correct model # I think) with the CAT motor...It does have more power (PTO 17 vs 21hp) and improved hydrolics with a FEL plus a backhoe option...some pricing I found as well below

5234 DL 23 HP Daihatsu Diesel w/bar tires $ 8,999

Series 6000 Compact Tractors
6284 D 28 HP Caterpillar Diesel w/turf tires $ 12,499

I would try both out and see which one fits better for your budget and applications. I havent heard anything bad about them including last years CAT model which is now this years 6000....

Does anyone own a 7284? It seems like a good buy, strong hp with a tight turning radius, and not too heavy to mow the lawn. I also hear great reliability stories about cub cadets. Why are they not more popular? ....

My guess is they run things like a small operation. What I mean by that is they really dont push their products through any larger campaign by either commericals, advertising, and from what I see a large Marketing effort.
You see Deere everywhere, but of course they have been a trade name for over a hundred years or more...
More dealers would be a good start, to help with the push..
IMO

I own a 5234D with bar tires, 60" MMM. I have been nothing but pleased with tractor. It seems to be very powerful. I remove snow with a 6ft rear blade and had now problem doing that. The deepest snow I have cleared was 9 inches. I also have 8, 42lb suitcase weights up front so I have no problem with traction in the snow, even uphill with a blade full of snow. I use a 5ft blade when moving/scraping dirt and rock, again the tractor performs very well.

The MMM provides a very nice cut and the tractor is quite maneuverable around trees, etc. I've also used a 24" dirt scoop to move piles of dirt. It takes longer than using a FEL but it works.

According to the specifications page in the owners manual, and my dealer, the 5234D has 20 hp at the PTO. I think someone wrote that the 5234D had 17 hp at the PTO.

I think you'll be very happy with either tractor. I was lucky enough to find a great dealer that carries Cub Cadet as his main line of equipment. ....

Regarding the 5234, how fast can you mow in a straight line, on dry grass? Do you ever wish it could go faster, or have more power? How easy is it to remove the MMM, and how long does it take? I need to buy a tractor that can run a 48" post hole digger and I think this model will raise the 3 pt high enough to make this work. Did you test drive the JD 2210 or massey ferg 2300? How much did you pay for the tractor with the 60" MMM? I really like the Cubs, and am seriously thinking about the 5234. ....

Chris, you do need a larger size tractor for a 48" auger then the 5000 series. They are on line with the sub-compacts like the BX series from Kubota. ....

I recently bought a Woods PHD25 post hole digger. It is specifically designed for a subcompact like a Cub 5234D or a Kubota BX2230. The auger bits are 30" long instead of 42". I have plenty of ground clearance with this auger. I have a 12" bit and I paid $695 for the complete package. There is also a 12" extension and parking stand available for the PHD25.

I also have a Woods 5' standard duty rear blade (RB60) and a Woods 5' landscape rake (LRC60 estate series) that I am very happy with. I also have a King Kutter 6' rear blade for snow removal and a KK 4' standard duty box scraper, both I repainted Cub yellow. They both work great. Last but not least, a KK 24" dirt scoop and a KK carry all.

I paid $9950 for the Cub Cadet 5234D with 60" MMM and bar tires in Sept of 2004.

I tested the JD2210, MF2300 and the Kubota BX2230. I did not like the rocker type hydro peddle of the MF2300 and the Kubota BX2230 or the price and FEL joystick location of the JD2210. I have only looked at the NH, and that was after I bought the Cub 5234D. The 5234D gave me the most comfortable seating position and legroom for my 6'5" 230 lb frame.

I have a very good dealer which is taking care of some problems I have had with my tractor but everything should be as good as new in a few days. I had a tranny problem, friction washer problem on the throttle assembly and minor lift cylinder leak. The complete transmission and lift cylinder are being replaced and the friction washer has been replaced. My dealer and Cub Cadet/MTD have been very good to work with and have taken care of my problems in a very prompt manner. ....

When It comes to tractors my comment is that bigger is better. The cost justification is up to the individual and really depends on the use. Only the guy sitting on the seat can make the judgement. Get your dealer to let you drive both around. If he has a demo unit or really wants your business maybe he will let you push some dirt or dig a hole. Then you will know for sure. ....
