 Foton 404 leaking fuel

I bought this tractor 10/08 so the 1yr warranty is expired. I called rural king and they are absolutely ZERO help. The guy had no clue what I was talking about. The tractor is leaking a substantial amount of fuel around the bowl like thing on the bottom of the fuel tank (fuel filter???) it has a little knob to cut the fuel supply off and a hose running out of it. My question is, can that be replaced? Is it actually the fuel filter? If not how do I stop the leak? It's in a very difficult spot to get to, but its leaking a decent amount of fuel from it so I want to get it fixed.
Thanks

The part that is leaking is the rubber fitting/gromet piece above the glass sediment bowl. Sorry about the confusion. Can that gromet/fitting be replaced. It's not the bowl leaking, its the bottom of the tank/top of the fitting.

A Foton is not a futon. It needs responsible care.

Diesel fuel needs to be meticulously clean, so engines have a filter that traps particles and a clear bowl so you can see if there's water in it. It, and other things, need to be serviced regularly, and maintainance is more than filling the tank (my apologies if you knew that).

You might join the Chinese Tractor Owners Association for information and preferably a manual. Meanwhile dry the fuel off so you can tell exactly where it's leaking. A drain at the bottom of the bowl? Where the bowl screws up into the housing? Out of a bleed screw? If doing that doesn't let you know what seems to need tightening, tell us more and we'll help as we can.

___

Revised answer: Your second post crossed my answer above. The location is still not totally clear to me, but different models have different filter housings.

Close the fuel shutoff if you haven't. Try to hand-tighten the fitting where it's leaking. The bowl might screw into a housing, or there might be a metal collar at the top to hold it. If that doesn't stop the leak, unscrew the bowl at the leak point. They generally have an O-ring (a black rubber round seal) to prevent leakage. If so, try replacing that. A hardware store or engine or tractor shop should have them.

The sediment bowl simply seats against a thin rubber gasket that's glued into the pot metal housing (the part that screws into the tank). Very often the problem is simply too much glue that's slopped onto the glass side of the gasket. Try to remove the excess with an Exacto knife or some such tool. Then try to reseal the glass bowl against the (hopefully) now-clean gasket. I find that I get a better seal if I rotate the bowl (while tightening) to find its "sweet spot" against the gasket.

If that doesn't work, drain the tank - and remove the housing. Then peel the seal away from the housing. Clean off all the excess glue, and replace with a similar sized seal. Rather than hope against hope that RK has such a thing in their parts bin, make your own. Get some nice thin gasket material from your local auto parts store, and cut one to fit.

I use a number of Chinese paint spray guns and other things that use a similar type of seal and they all crap out too soon. They tend to use either low-grade cork or rubber that has very low solvent resistance, and I suspect your sediment bowl has the same problem. I've found a fix for my spray guns that seems, so far, to be pretty darn permanent and easy enough to do.

I take the old gasket out and clean the surface thoroughly, suing s Scotchbrite pad and lacquer thinner or acetone. Then I prop it up so that the gasket seat is perfectly level and fill the groove with RTV silicone molding compound. I've also used silicone sealant and it works okay, but is not a fluid as the molding compound so it takes a bit of effort to get it leveled. Once the silicone has cured for 48 hours it is solvent proof and very resilient, allowing it to seal to the glass sediment bowl without requiring excess clamping pressure. Since it doesn't permanently deform, it won't spontaneously start leaking later, either.

It's a bit more work than just cutting a gasket, but you only need to do it once.

Rich

Especially if you can't easily find replacement filter elements (also termed cartridges or filters) for that filter assembly, another option is to replace the whole thing with one that's well made and more easily serviced. Any car or tractor mechanic should be able to do that for you.
