so few private machines for sale

I have been looking for a compact track loader for a couple of months now, and it seems in Ontario, there are so few for sale privately. Why is that?

Highpoint,

If you'll be so kind as to provide the model number or make you are looking for, I might be able to help you.

There are many good sites on the internet that host private listings for used machinery. Some of my favorite internet sites are:

tractorhouse.com
ironsearch.com
equipmentlocator.com

There are many others, but those three will give you a good start.

Hope this helps.

Joel

thx for the offer Candoarms.
Bobcat t190, under 1000 hrs, cab w/heat, joystick control, located in Ontario (which could be my issue, just none here). I have been following the sites you mentoned.
It seems dealers have almost all the machines. Is this a telltale sign to stay away?

so few private machines for sale

Highpoint,

Private sales during the winter months are a bit more difficult, due to the conditions. There's usually no place to park a machine where it won't get covered with snow, or where it isn't hidden from passing traffic by a huge snow pile.

In addition to that, most people don't want to get dressed up to go outside to demonstrate the tractor to a prospective buyer, only to have the sale fall through, time sfter time.

North Dakota's winters are beyond extreme. Home sales are almost zero this time of year. Car dealers don't do much business.....because nobody wants to wander around in a outdoor car lot when it's 20 below zero.

For the most part, winter tractor business is almost entirely done by trading with a local dealer. The dealer keeps the lot clear of snow, and he's there to answer the phone calls, demonstrate the tractors, load them on trailers, etc.

If you're looking for a tractor from a private sale, I think you'll find that the Spring sales will pick up quite a bit -- after the snow is gone and the grass is green.

Even so, I'll be happy to help you out with the search. If I find something, I'll post it here for you.

Joel

Another reason. If it rolls on rubber, people buy on speculation and later change their minds and turn to Craig's and Kijiji. But the only person who buys a tracked machine is a professional who will base it on business needs, so there's less turnover.

Also, the 13% tax in Ontario means that if a contractor wants to upgrade, it's more attractive to trade it to a dealer than to sell privately.

Especially with the Canadian dollar worth more than the American, you'll find more variety and much lower prices in the US.

It's important to know what size compact track loader you are looking for. Are you looking for a full size skid steer loader, or a true compact SSL? Like my avatar to the left, my machine is rubber-tired BUT I also have steel over-the-tire-tracks too. Adding rubber tracks to my machine added over $10K to the price. Now it's even more, and 5 years ago my machine listed at $47,000---to add 10" to that just didn't make sense. And the cost of replacement rubber tracks can be as much as $4000. Then there's the replacement parts of the carriage---one roller can be close to $500. A premium set of tires can be $1500 and last as long a set of tracks.

My local detroit metro craigslist has a few tracked machines you might want to check out. And that's the other thing: currently these machines don't hold their value so to my mind it's a lose-lose situation.

so here's the scenario. I have decided something along the lines of a bobcat t190. property is rolling, sandy loom. I think I have thought this out in the sense that a wheeled machine will get me in trouble on the soft loom, versus the track. I don't have issues with the extra cost or maintenance of the undercarriage. having a machine that would do most heavy stuff around the property and have a lot of available attachments. It seems like auction prices on the newer units are in the neighborhood of 20-22k. But here in Ontario, ads are 95% dealers. Not everyone can be trading in their machines? or can they? Are the ctl's that much in demand that the dealers are getting the units? I can see it being the slow time, but spring is around the corner.

Highpoint,

My son recently sold his 4-wheeler to a Canadian family. The vehicle's title was sent to the customs office at the border crossing (Pembina, ND). It was a very simple procedure, but I have no idea what the Canadian family had to go through on their end, nor do I know how much the import tariff was.

Give your local border patrol office a call. They'll be happy to explain the procedure to you, as well as give you an estimated cost for your import taxes and / or tariff fees.

Overall, I think it's a very easy process.

Joel

To answer your question about only dealers having machines is because IMHO, being a contractor myself, those machines are probably repo's from guys who have no work and can't pay for the machine. Same thing applies to craigslist---guys can't hold on long enough to wait for spring (if they even have work) and therefore have to liquidate. I see a few a month on detroit metro craigslist liquidating everything.

As far as the T190, do some research by checking out skidteerforum.com. Seems like there were issues with drive motors. Also consider a full enclosed car with heat and air conditioning. I've got full cab and heat only which, with heat on cold and blower running on high, keeps me comfy to about 93 degrees F.
