Mid mount mowers are good for lawn or very smooth pasture, but unless you keep it cut short, mid mower won't perform well in very tall grass/weeds. If you plan on mowing rougher ground, a rear mount rotary cutter should be planned on. How much of the property will you plan to mow, and how often?

Yes, you can flip them 3 or 4 different positions. Narrow, wide, or high position that restricts sway only when hitch is up most of the way. Do you have an owner's manual? It would have pictures of different positions.

You don't mention if you are looking for new or used. Also if your land is flat, steep, rolling or whatever. What size mower will you want? How many acres will be mowed? What price range you looking for? Just from what I do know, I would lean towards a small to mid sized 5000 series. Unless you really want hydro transmission. Then I would look at 4720. If looking for something older, 2040 - 2640, 2150 - 2750, or 2155 - 2755 would all be good choices.

Do the brake pedals release after you press them down? If not, then you may have frozen linkage. That still does not explain the no hydraulics issue. A sump screen plugged with brake material or other debris would. Have you removed the sump screen yet? If not, I would recommend removing it and cleaning it. Also replace the filter and transmission fluid. Then see if the hydraulics come back to life.

Engine Shutoff Circuit Operation
Function:
To prevent the machine from being started or left running in
an unsafe condition.
Operating Conditions:
• Operator on seat.
• and/or;
• Gear range lever in neutral position, PTO Switch Off.
• Park brake locked.
Theory of Operation:
The starting motor will crank when current is provided from
the battery.
Battery current is provided through the starting motor
solenoid contacts when operating conditions are met.
If the operating conditions are not met, the engine will not
start as fuel will not be delivered to the combustion
chambers. See “Cranking Circuit Operation” in this chapter.
Fuel is supplied to the engine through the operation of the
K2 fuel relay and the Y2 Fuel shutoff solenoid, provided
that operating conditions are met.
If the operating conditions are not met, fuel is not supplied
and the engine will not start or run. See “Fuel Supply
Operation” in this chapter.
When the operating conditions exist, the control module
provides battery voltage to the K2 fuel relay, Y2 fuel shutoff
solenoid, and K1 start relay.
The energized fuel relay coil closes the relay contacts and
the closed contacts provide a current path to the fuel
solenoid pull-in coil.
The Y2 fuel solenoid opens, fuel is provided to the engine
and ignition can occur.
The A1 control module provides a power circuit for the fuel
solenoid hold-in coil.
The power circuit through the control module is a 0.5
second timed delay circuit.
If the operator leaves the seat for more than 0.5 second
without engaging the park brake and placing the gear
range lever in neutral with the PTO switch off, the circuit
stops voltage to the hold-in coil, the fuel solenoid deenergizes
and fuel is shut off to the engine.
With the gear range transmission in the neutral position,
current flows through the S4 transmission neutral switch to
the S3 PTO switch and then to the A1 control module
indicating the machine is in neutral.
When the operator is off the seat, battery voltage to the A1
Control module is routed to the S4 transmission neutral
switch through the 450 Wht/Blk wire to a 3 Amp fuse in the
F4 fuse block, through the 602 Blk/Blu wire, to the 610 Blk/
Grn wire, and then to the S4 transmission neutral switch.
From the transmission neutral switch, current is routed
through the switch and the 609 Blu/Yel wire to the S3 PTO
Switch. From the PTO switch, current is routed to the A1
Control Module via the 613/603 Blu/Red wire.
The operator may start the machine while off the seat if the
gear range selector lever is in the neutral position
(transmission neutral switch closed), the PTO switch is in
the Off position and the seat switch is in the Defeat
position. In this condition, current flows to the S2 seat
switch defeat contacts from the A1 Control Module via the
606/607 Blu/Yel wire. From the S2 seat switch current flows
through the 600/614 Blu/Yel wire directly to the A1 Control
Module. Current also flows from the Defeat Switch contacts
through the 608 Blu/Yel wire to the 609 Blu/Yel wire and
then to the S3 PTO switch. From the PTO switch the
current follows the 613/603 Blu/Red wire path back to the
A1 Control Module.
With the engine running and the S2 seat switch in the
defeat position, the PTO may now be engaged. This
eliminates the 603 Blu/Red wire current input to the A1
Control Module from the PTO switch. The current input to
the A1 control module now comes exclusively from the S2
Seat switch defeat contacts via the 600/614 Blu/Blk wire.

If you disconnect the wire from the sending unit and touch it to a clean ground with key on, the gauge should move to full if the gauge is good. If it does, you need a new sender. If it doesn't, be sure the wire is good between the sender and the gauge before you get a new cluster.

If it slips in low range on a hill and doesn't go at all in high range, I would say the clutch is shot. Do you have any free travel in the pedal?

If you are getting no response, it is most likely a problem with neutral start switch. Quad Range transmission has one on right side of transmission case. The powershift is also on right side of the case, but it is actually on the transmission control valve and not the transmission case itself. The powershift probably also has a small round cover over it to protect it. Sometimes on either one, if you wiggle the gearshift in and out of neutral, while you hold the key in crank position, you might get get it to start that way until you get a chance to replace it.

You don't mention if you have a powershift or Quad-Range. I am going to assume you have a Quad since I have seen this problem more often on them. The clutch valve has a hydraulic piston in it that holds the lever in position. If your transmission pressure is low, the piston can't hold it in. If your transmission or clutch is not slipping, I assume your pressure is OK. If you have a gauge, you should still check it. Should be between 140 and 160 PSI. The thing I see most often is the pto clutch lever in the valve housing sometimes breaks or bends. The part number is R67981. I have attached parts diagram. It is item number 5. You also will need a mounting gasket and ten orings(#15) for the oil tubes #14, 16, and 18.

You might try Nunes. They made mower decks for some john Deere Turf machines. Most were single spindle designs, but I seem to remember some that were three spindle. http://www.nunesequipment.com/

When you say model 90, is that a skid steer or a boom mower? Is there a snap ring visible at the rod guide?

Randy, do you have a 4400? If so, then the $5.00 thermistor should fix it. It fits behind the fuse panel. Remove the bolts holding the fuse panel and pull it out as far as you can. You will see a small square orange "chicklet" attached to the wiring in back. You need to cut out the old one and splice in the new one either by soldering it in or using small butt splice connectors. The part number is Lvu10323.

You need to remove the tin cover under the belly of the tractor to get to the transmission filter. That is the smaller filter you have left over. The filter under the step is the hydraulic suction filter.

Tony, I don't think you will get deere to pay for the axle upgrade now. That was something they offered to original owners that had turf tires and had problems with scuffing the turf. The "kit" required a new axle, steering pump and steering valve. the parts to upgrade are still available if you find you need it, but it is pretty expensive. There is no problem with the original axle and some people got along with it just fine in turf conditions. It is possible yours has been upgraded or it might be new enough to have had it from the factory. If you post your serial number, I can check it for you.

Sounds like a good time to switch back to John Deere Hygard. Pricey, but you can be sure it is spec'd for your Gator. Not sure of the TSC brand, but sometimes the wording of manufacturer specs is decieving. It might say [u]compares[/u] to john deere specs but may not [u]meet[/u] specs.

Since you are losing lights when attempting to start, I would suspect a bad battery cable. Try connecting a jumper cable from the positive battery post to the large lug on the starter to bypass the cable.

The 1070 is a great tractor. No real problem areas. Biggest thing I can think of is the expense of the clutch. Be sure to check clutch operation. You should feel two distinct stages when pushing in the clutch. The pto should engage smoothly without grinding when you push the clutch all the way down. Other than that, just make sure all gears work, all fluids look good and engine should start quickly and easily without excess smoke.

The x55 series tractors have interlock linkage to keep the pedals from being pushed if operator is off the seat or if the brake is locked. My guess is something in this linkage is worn, sticking, or out of adjustment. If you look under the left side of the seat, you should see a rod sticking up with a plastic end on it. That is the rod that needs to be depressed when you sit on the seat to unlock the pedals. Try looking under the tractor while someone moves tht rod. you can then see how it operates. Lubricate all the moving parts of the linkage to make sure it moves freely. Also, if the seat is in need of repair or if you have swapped to a non-John Deere seat, it might not push on this linkage properly.
