Steve - there is a TSC in Oneida N.Y., near syracuse. Still not a hop skip and jump from where you are, but maybe worth a trip if you are ever heading East on the thruway. Just make sure you call them first, I do not think they keep stuff like that in stock routinely.

Russel - I know of no web site which directly compares the 2 tractors, so you will have to base your decision on opinions of those who own them. I own a B1700, and have approximately 80 hours of use on it so far. I have the Kubota loader, 4 wheel drive, and ag tires. I can not directly compare my tractor to the NH, having never driven one, but I can say that I am entirely satisfiied with my purchase. For a little tractor, it has surprising capabilities, and is of excellent quality in my opinion. Remember, the 1700/2100/2400 series is now discontinued, so you very well may be able to cut quite a deal on a left over model before the new models come out. For comparison I paid $13,500 for mine. What sort of price have you been given? I would bet you can go lower than what I paid, unless you are in a particularily expensive part of the country. Any specific questions about the 1700, e-mail me.

Brent - I own a B1700, which is essentially the same size and capability as the 7200, just newer. Sometimes just for fun I will tool around in 2 wheel drive just to see how it feels, and the loss of capability when compared to 4 wheel drive is astounding. Simple tasks, like dragging a tine harrow over soft ground in the riding arena, cause wheelspin and loss of efficiency, and I have ag tires. I may be wrong on this point, but at least on the 4wd models, when you are in 2wd you only have rear brakes. If that applies to the full time 2wd machines or not I do not know, but if all you have is rear brakes, you better live in Kansas, or you will get in trouble quick. The real farm tractors get traction from tremendous weight. Our little tractors NEED 4wd to do anything but the most simple of tasks, on the flattest of surfaces in my opinion. I might spend $5000 on it if all I wanted was a super duper lawnmower, but I bet you will be disappointed if you ask it to do much more than that.

John - I am not saying that anyone would stoop so low as to misrepresent a piece of used equipment for sale, but let me read between the lines as I see it. If the hardware for the 3 point is "lost', my guess is that the whole shooting match doesn't work, and the seller is trying to hide that fact from you. If the battery is "dead", my guess is that there is something major wrong with the machine that would become evident when it is started. Come on - if you were selling a machine for several thousand dollars, wouldn't you put a $30 battery in it to show prospective buyers how well it runs? I am sure the guy selling you this tractor would NEVER do anything dishonest, but unless the price is dirt cheap let HIM put the new battery in, and let HIM look around for where he misplaced the 3 point apparatus, then take the thing for a good test drive. Any lawyers out there who think this is slander, all of the above is simply my opinion based on absolutely no fact (just experience)

Ed - this is an open invitation to you or anyone else on the board. When I bought my farm, the lady who sold it took her Allis Chalmers mid size tractor with her (it was a 30 hp model or so, much smaller than a Ford 8n, but bigger than a B series Kubota). She never installed the ROPS, and left it in a box in the garage. Anybody who is handy with a torch or brackets can have the thing if they can pick it up. I live in Central New York, near Syracuse.

So far this is only on paper, so I thought I would throw it out for comment. I am considering purchasing a set of lifting weights and a barbell - I think thats what you call the metal bar you pult the weights on - and having the barbell welded to the rear of my backblade. If I want to move snow, I will leave all weights off. If I need to ballast the front loader, I can add 300 pounds of weight. Before I spend the time and $, does anybody think this will fail (i.e., weld won't hold up, not enough total weight, or some other flaw I have not thought of? Blade is a Woods 5 footer, tractor is a Kubota B1700.

Scott - not to complicate your life, but are you ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY sure you do not want a hydrostatic transmission? You mention a loader, and I really find the hydro makes like easier. If you have tried hydro, and still want the 790 or 2500, I bet they are virtually identical in quality and capabilities based on brief test drives I took on both before i went hydro. "Once you go hydro you wilkl never go back"

Jim 0 you are 100% right about the tip factor. My Kubota is unstable on a 15 degree slope, much less 30! The only POSSIBLE exception would be the new BX series, which is of similar size to the Steiner 430, yet has a true 3 point hitch, pto, etc. It looks lower to the ground than a regular compact tractor, but I have never seen one in person. Maybe you could see one before you spend the $

I'm with Doug - my Kubota doesn't ever rip into the ground. It sounds to me like you guys who shelled out $15,000-$25,000 need to get real p-ssed off at JD, threaten to tell everyone and anyone you know about your bad experience with their product, and demand a fix or a refund to go buy a different machine. You are the consumer, and the reason any company exists is to keep its customers satisfied. I feel bad for you, it sounds like maybe the 4000 series got released before all the R&D was completed.

Al - how much did it cost? the $500 one at TSC seems cheezy to me, but no way in the world will the boss (aka wife) let me go the $1100 for a Kubota. Any in-the-middle brands out there?

I hate to contradict somebody who actually owns one, but I tested everything out there before I settled on my Kubota, and of the 4 major brands (K, J.D., N.H, C.C) I drove, by far the roughest feeling, most "unfinished" looking and feeling, and generally the crudest one was the Cub Cadet. They may be extremely well built and long lasting, I certainly do not know, but I really felt that other brands had a higher level of fit, finish, comfort, convenience,noise control, and refinement than the Cub.
Just my opinion, but do yourself a favor and try several before you buy.

I don't know how much instant depreciation to allow a tractor as it rolls out of the dealers lot, but as a starting point I can tell you that I bought my B1700 ( hydro, 4 wheel drive) with Kubota loader and ag tires for $13,500 in March of 1999. Governor Pataki added his 7% of course. Maybe a fair deal to you and the seller would be to say that his lesson ( bought the wrong tractor?) cost him $1,000, so you would pay $12,500 for the machine and also save the sales tax. I would consider that a fair deal IF the full warantee was transferable to you. If no warantee, the price would need to go way down.<br>Just my idea, based on nothing but ccommon sense,<br>PaulB

Rich - what will you need the tractor for? My Kubota is a 17 horsepower, hydrostatic drive, 4 wheel drive. I bought it new, and even a really used one would be hard to find in the 5-6K range I think. As for local dealers I have only dealt with one, and I have no complaints. I don't think the webmaster likes us to talk about specific names and businesses, so lets talk via e-mail, O.K.?<br>PaulB

My Kubota B1700 will handle my 5 foot back blade with ease, whether moving snow or dirt, so I can not imagine that the 4100 would have even the slightest trouble with a similar size implement. My guess is that JD doesn't make a 5 footer, so they can't recommend one. Any aftermarket brand should do fine.

Pete - this is just how I handle my situation, so it might not apply to you, but here goes. I mow my land(4 acres of lawn, 4 of pasture ) with my garden tractor, not my 1700. Why? because my land is hilly, and the Kubota scares the hell out of me on slopes. I therefore set the kubota up to be the perfect machine for snow and heavy lifting/dragging/moving of stuff, so I put on ags and don't worry about the mowing. You already have a garden tractor, so why not get the best compact tractor for the other work you have to do, and do the lawn with the old garden tractor. 3 acres takes me about 2 hours - no big deal.<br>Just a suggestion,<br>PaulB
