I have almost hit the 50 hour mark on my kubota B2100. The manual says to change the hydrolic fluid and filter and clean the pick up screen. My dealer says this is not required. I was told to just change the filter. When I asked if this would affect the warranty he told me that even if I didn't change the motor oil or filter for 1000 hrs. the warranty would be valid- no questions asked. Should I go by the book or the dealer??I am going to change the motor oil. The dealer recommends kubota 5w40 oil but the manual doesn't even refer to 5w40 as a recommeded weight. Do I use 10w30 (per the book) or 5w40 per the dealer?

Dave - I did the 50 hour service on my B1700 about 20 hours ago, and I not only did it "by the book", I did better than the book. I changed the engine oil and filter per the book, the HST oil and filter by the book, AND cleaned the HST screen ( right in front of the right rear wheel) even though the book says to do this at 200 hours. I was glad I did it right, as the screen was filthy with metal shavings. Use Kubota filters, use AT LEAST the hour suggestions by the book, or even more often, and use the oil and oil weight specified by the manufacturer. They know more about it than you, me, your dealer, or anybody, and those suggestions are if anything a little conservative in my book. To me, my tractor was a lot of $$$, and I will listen to noone who tells me to short change my maintanance schedule. You will need a 14, 17, and 19 mm socket for all the drain plugs, and a big-ass wrench for the HST screen. My biggest socket is 25mm, and it was too small. Also, I and many others who I talked to at the Kubota board found that if you add the specified amount of HST fluid, you will overfill. Must be that all the old stuff doesn't drain out. My book calls for 3.17 gallons, yet it was full at about 2.5 gallons, so chech the dipstick carefully.Good luckPaulB ....

Dave, PaulB told you right. Your particular dealer may (or may not) honor the warranty if the proper service is not done, but it sure is better to just not have a problem in the first place, Kubota does stress doing the 50 hour service, and I'm convinced the life of any engine is greatly dependent upon the condition of the lubrication. As far as what weight oil to use, it can depend to some extent on the temperature; 10W-30 is probably good almost anywhere, and theoretically at least 5W-40 just covers a broader temperature range. Since I'm in central Texas where 100 degrees is not uncommon in the summer, but have very little freezing weather, I'll use 15W-40 (Delo 400). ....

I'm really surprised to hear your dealer said that. I've always been told the most important oil change you'll ever do to your new equipment is the first one. All those parts are new and this is when any imperfections will ground themselves down. Thats why that earlier post said he found those shavings in his oil.I would change the oil per the owners manual, if not even a little sooner. That dealer, maybe he's a good one, but he definitely gave you some bad advice there.Ray ....

Yea Dave, I heard the same thing about not changing your hydro fluid at 50 hrs on the Kubota board. Many Kubota and Deere service managers don't reccommend a 50 hrs. hydro change. But those are the guys that have never cleaned a plugged pick-up screen at 50 hrs or looked at all the metal shavings in the fluid or sliced open the filter and looked at the insides in sunlight. I have done all those things and believe me 50 hrs. service is a good choice--- Just like the manuel says. ....

Dave,Always follow the book under warranty, and even after. The engineers write the books, and get feed back from ALL the dealers. That is how problems get solved, and how they can come up with new recommendations. The wider the viscosity spread, the more junk they have to put in oil to get it to do it. If the book recommends straight 30, and you store the vehicle in a heated area, you could use that year round. It is only on start up that the multiviscosity oil is of any benefit. My bet is the dealer is selling you a higher priced oil, and by the sounds of his recomendations, looking for servce work! Remember one thing. If it isn't written down (Book) it didn't happen, wasn't done, or worse yet in your case, wasn't said. You would be suprised what can be told from an engine, or hydro being torn down. An oil analysis alone can sink your claim. Hope this helps.Bill ....

Dave,Take this with a grain of salt, but my Father changed the Hydro Oil in his Kubota G1800. I "think" the dealer recommended the 5w40 as well. I know he bitched about the higher price. I think the dealer told him, it wasn't necessary, but it really helps in the winter if you don't have a tranny heater or store the tractor in a heated area. I can't remember if there was another reason, or if temp was the main reason.. I also don't know if it helped this past winter...we didn't have enough snow to even think about starting the motor. ....

My dealer told me I didn't really need to change the hydro fluid after I had already done it at 50 hours. My screen also had some metal filings in it. I'll go by the manual myself.The 5W-40 vs 5W-30 oil should only be of benefit in hot weather. In cold weather I would stick to 5W-30. ....
