I work at at a Steiner dealer. I read the post by Richard Harburn about the Kohler not reving up all the way. We had one do the same thing at the shop. After much testing we were nowhere. We sent the unit to a Gold level kohler dealer. They said the lifters were pumped up from running straight 30 weight oil. They fixed the engine and shipped the unit back to us. It did rev better.
The point I'm getting at is the fix may be as simple as using 10w30. I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the good hints. I tried with the rippers down and it certainly loosened more dirt and made it easier to move. For what it is worth, the box is made by Gannon manufacturing and does have a hinged rear blade. There are pins preventing the rear blade from swinging back that can be removed by taking out cotter pins. I haven't tried removing them yet since you suggest it may make the job even trickier.

Going cross directions would probably help a lot if I weren't trying to put the coop between a fence and some trees. The hitch points look sturdy enough so I may try bags of sand if I need more cutting power. I haven't had any issues with the rippers down other than getting the final smooth finish. I suspect that I need a lot more practice to get that right.

Hello Eveyone, I have an opportunity to purchase a Bolens Model 2104 compact utility tractor and would like to ask advice for information on this model and if this would be a good deal. I don't know anything about the Bolens brand. The tractor is a 1992 Bolens Model 2104, 4 wheel drive. It has a 3 cyl. Iseki diesel (not sure of hp, but I assume around 20-25hp), rear pto, 3-point hitch and comes with a Woods 60" rear finish mower. It has about 300 hours on the clock and has been garaged since new so it is in very good condition. Asking price is $5000. Is this a good deal?? Is Bolens/Iseki a reputable brand?? Are parts still available?? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Oh, by the way, I'm located in Southeast Michigan. Thanks again!

Murf - what implement do you mean when you say "a cultivator"?

I have the same issue as terry, a garden with the top 5-6 inches tilled with a rototiller followed by a clay bed preventing drainage. My garden is a little smaller than his and the tractor I am buying is a few hp smaller than his (18 hp). I was thinking of using the box and loader to move half the topsoil in the garden to one end then use the rippers on the gannon to break up the 'next layer' but that sounds like a LOT of work.

Roger and Bill, the sound is definitely coming from the control valve assy as evidenced by the craftsman flat blade stethescope. The manual shows an adjusting screw presumably to increase or decrease pressure on the spring. I will give that a try and see what happens.

Bill, by the way this is a B6100. It has been a workhorse and will continue to be until I can save the pennies for the B7500. It's hard to convince the better half that I NEED it, especially when this one continues to run.

I just purchased a used tractor. Is the model L1500 a valid number? Haven't seen it surfing about. It's a two cylinder diesel.I need a new rack and pinion steering box. Any suggestions on where to look?

Sorry I read "Rotary Tiller" instead of "Rotary Cutter"...

Mine is a four footer. Remember my 4 hours in the seat - But the tractor dosen't even seem to notice that the cutter is there.

Brian,if you search the archives on this board for 4000 series problems,you will find you're not alone.Deere has had a lot of problems with the early models such as yours.From what I have seen lately,Deere is trying to address the problems,and improve on the newer models.I'm not Deere bashing here,I would say for every 1 unhappy owner,there are 100 happy ones.But if I were you I would try to obtain an extended warranty from the dealer or Deere,so you're covered until they get the bugs worked out.If that does'nt set with you,than I would try to sell or trade,there is nothing worse than being disatisfied with anything you have purchased.I know this has crossed your mind,and you feel like you'll lose your butt,but a mans pease of mind is worth quit a bit.

Mike,I live about 90 miles N.E. of the city.I'm sure you would'nt be intrested,but I have a like new Kubota G1900S with 60" deck for sale,140 hours.These units are a great trim mower and can cover a lot of ground also.

Since the dealers are now receiving the New Case Compacts-(Boomers)- in their inventory, does anyone know if there are any incentives out there to purchase one. I think New Holland has special financing on their compacts now, was wondering if Case had anything like promotions, special financing etc. If anyone knows of anything that is coming up, please let the board know. I am set on purchasing a Case-New Holland due to the excellent dealer support that I have received in the past, but sure would like some incentive to do it now. Thanks

Yes,you can engage and dis-engage the front axle on any B-Series,even the BX models.The bi-speed turn works very well,unlike the super-steer on the Boomers,which the whole axle pivets,the front wheels turn at faster speeds,independently,pulling the front end around,and making a shorter turn.Hope this doesn't sound like I'm bashing the Boomers,cause I'm not.I've heard nothing but good things about the Super-Steer option.

Terry,$6'500. seems a little steep.Have you considered trying to sell the Deere yourself? Anytime you can walk into a dealer and talk buying outright,you are much better off.On the other side of the coin,it can be a real pain trying to sell something,especially when your selling a "like new" tractor.People will always think that something is wrong with it,and try to beat you up.Hard to find the right buyer,how has the cash to pay for a Deere,seems like these days most people want to finance about everything.I guess the price difference depends on how much you would like to have that New Holland.I've seen your posts about the Deere,and understand wanting to get rid of it,but I would'nt take it in the shorts too bad if I were you. Doc,sometimes the front grill will pop out of its mounts when hood has been unlatched and raised.Check to see if bottom of the grill is seated and the top is popped back into place,before closing the hood.We have a B2710,and I've never had any vibration if all the panels are intact.

Ryan,before you go tooting your horn too loud,you might want to check the archives on the board concerning problems with the Deere 4000 series compacts,you might be at least a little bit surprised at what you will find.But then again,maybe not.
