Personally, I think you get more bang for your buck with the 790. If you don't mind the gear drive transmission, the 790 is the way to go. You get a heavier tractor which would be an advantage with the "heavy land clearing" that you mentioned. However, if hydro is important to you, the 4100 is a good machine also. It might be preferable if you plan to do mostly mowing after your land clearing is done.

C.W., the 1250 was one step larger than the 1050. I think the HP was around 38 pto HP. Deere also marketed a 1450 and a 1650 which seem to be even more scarce than the 1250. I was under the impression that they were just as reliable as the smaller 50 series. I think they were not popular because they were same HP rating as the 2040, 2240, and 2440 tractors, which were sold at the same time(late 70's - early 80's).

I,m definitely not an expert on this particular model, but I just checked out the specs on john deere's site (link listed below), and I would certainly think that the 59" blower should throw farther than 7 to 8 feet. It is listed as a 2 stage blower and I have always found that two stage blowers throw at least 20 to 30 feet. You say you tried various ground speeds, but what engine rpm are you running? You should be running near full throttle. Check your tach and see where your pto speed is shown. I'm guessing in the 3000 rpm range. If you're running proper speed and still not performing well, there could be a problem with the blower or possibly it is too large for the tractor. I see that the 4100 is the smallest hp tractor listed for 59". Perhaps the 47" would be a better match.

Chad, does the preheater work on your tractor? When you turn on the key, the indicator light on the dash should light up and you should not try to crank the engine until the indicator light goes out. If the light does not come on, the control module could be bad or the bulb could be blown. If the light is working normally , but it still starts hard, the preheater itself could be bad. Worst case scenario, you could have low compression in your engine. Installation of a block heater could solve all of these problems, they can make the engine start like summer. The big drawback to the block heater is they consume quite a bit of electricity and you need to be near electricity to plug it in.

George, the regenerative circuit can be deactivated by simply moving the control lever approximately halfway to the right. this circuit is only on the dump side of the bucket valve. There is even a moveable stop on the valve spool if you want to lock it out altogether. I believe this info is in the operators manual. If not, your dealer should be able to show you the stop in a tech manual.

Terry, It sounds like you may have noise coming from your mfwd driveshaft. when you are in 2wd and moving at high speed, the shaft will sometimes vibrate. Be sure the area around the exposed shaft under the tractor is clean then spray some silicone lubricant on the shaft where it passes through the center housing. Also spray some on the splined couplings on each end of the shaft. this may cure your problem, atleast temporarily. It may be neccasary to repeat this occasionally due to the shaft being exposed to dirt , mud or whatever.

Eric, as Roger said the 50 series brakes do tend to rust up from condensation build-up. There should be a hook shaped vent tube on top of the brake housing. It is important to make sure this tube is open. I also like to cut about a 1 inch piece of the gasket out near the bottom of the cover to help air circulation in the brake housing. I think deere sealed them in case of running in deep water, but most people never get in water that deep. As far as the 1070, it sounds as if you might have a warped clutch disk or pressure plate that gets worse as it heats up with use. The only solution for this would be to split the tractor and replace all damaged parts.There are special tools involved with adjusting this clutch assembly so it is probably best to leave this to your dealer unless you have access to these tools. It doesn't sound like oil viscosity is your problem.

Shorty, Personally the main thing that I feel is important when breaking in a new engine, is to be sure to warm up the engine thoroughly before working it very hard. Most manufacturers also reccomend to vary the operating speed alot during the first 50 hours. They also reccomend not using synthetic oils for the first 100 hours since they are too slippery and dont allow the rings to seat properly.

ggman, three point hitches and implements are divided by category. "0" is the smallest and usually found on lawn and garden tractors. "1" is the size on most compact tractors and smaller utility tractors. "2" & "3" is found on larger farm tractors. Hopefully this answers your question. As long as the implement is category "1" and the weight of the implement is within the reccomended lift capacity of your tractor, it should fit your compact tractor.

Jeff, the regenerative circuit that Brent mentioned is supposed to prevent the delay tou are experiencing. It could be that the regenerative circuit is blocked out. There is an adjustable stop in the linkage which may be in the wrong position for loader operation. The stop needs to be in position if the scv is to be used for nonloader work. Ask your dealer about this.

John Deere built a 900HC several years back. It was based on the 850 and 950 series tractors. It had high clearance and offset design just like the IH 140.If you could find one of these it would probably fit your needs perfectly. Unfortunately I don't think many of these were built.

Hi Bob,
I really can't help on the horsepower issue, but I just thought I would pass on some info on yanmar in general. While they have a good reputation with their association with John Deere, I understand that parts are near impossible to find. Some people mistakenly assume that they can get parts from deere but very few parts will interchange. This is something you definitely want to check into before you purchase one of these tractors. While I think yanmar is a good tractor, any brand will eventually need repair parts.

I just thought I would add my two cents worth about rear tire ballast. In our area, the chemical of choice is magnesium-chloride. It is supposed to be less corrosive and less harmful to the soil in the event of a leak. It is also not flammable.

Reg, there should be a spring directly under the frame on the right hand side. It is approximately 6 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. It should be connected between an adjustable eyebolt and the transmission centering linkage. Sounds like this spring is broken or missing. The safety switch is a real bear to get to. It is on the swashplate lever inside of the right hand frame rail.It takes small hands and a lot of patience to reach the 2 screws that hold it. Fortunately this switch is very reliable and rarely gves a problem.

Hi,
If you look at John Deere's warranty, it states that it is the responsibility of the customer to get the tractor to the dealer for warranty service. Some dealers will absorb this cost. Some won,t. It would be a good idea to ask your dealer what their policy is before you buy if this is important to you. On an actual safety recall(Product Improvement Program, as Deere calls them) Deere pays to have your unit picked up or for a service call to do the repair. Since the axle is not a safety related recall, technically it is your responsibility as the customer to pay for transport to the dealer, unless they have a different policy. I would have to say that most of the better dealers would have such a policy, at least through the first year of warranty.

There are lots of things to consider to prevent roll-overs. First of all, I hope your tractor is equipped with a rollbar and seatbelt. Second, WEAR THE SEATBELT!!! The rollbar won't protect you if you fall off of the tractor and get pinned under it. Third, set the tires out to the widest position you can that will allow you to do the jobs you need to accomplish. Fourth, use ballast as neccasary for stability. Front and rear weights are available as well as fluid filled rear tires. Finally, if you have a front end loader or a rear mounted implement, keep it as low to the ground as possible for stability, especially on hills. Good luck and be careful!

As far as avoiding any particular year, I would shy away from the first couple of years they were built. These units did not have a two stage clutch. They did however have a built-in over-running clutch to compensate, but weren't as convenient for pto work. Otherwise all years were very reliable tractors.

The engine on the 755 is rebuildable, but you are limited to .020" oversize bore. The big enemy of these engines is dirt. Proper air filter maintenance is a must. The engine is not sleeved so if the block is worn more than .020" will correct, then a complete engine is usually the most economical repair. I don't know of any alternative engine that will bolt right in. It might pay to check around for prices on the engine. $5000.00 sounds a little steep.

There is a two position adjustment for hydro pedal pressure. It is the same bolt that adjusts creep. I have found that the factory sets them in the stiffer setting. adjusting them to the lighter setting makes a big difference. Ask your dealer to make this adjustment for you, it is a little touchy to get it right.
