Hello Rich, what you say about manufacturers, dealers, etc hits home. Why won't companies sell right to individuals(I understand the dealer thing but this is uncalled for). Like you said there are dealers that use the internet to their advantage then there are dealers that let us do the work. I want to buy a PTO pump for the backhoe I bought...Ive done all the research, called the distributer, have to give the dist the serial number so he can tell me the model I need etc. For all that I get to go to a dealer that has helped me not one bit, and pay him thru the nose for what I have done. If I was a dealer(I've thought about it) and someone comes to me with all the info etc. If all I had to do was make a phone call, I'd give the guy a good deal...then he would come back next time. I understand dealers don't like to hear this and there are some very good dealers represented on this board (One of which is Len Sheaffer I know others but some don't frequent this board). I believe dealers should get the stuff cheaper than if dists sold to individuals, I'm all for that but if I have to do the work of the dealer I ought to be able get a little of what the dealer would make. I believe in taking care of people who take care of me. Just my $.02....O.K. More like $20

I have located privately owned year old John Deere 4100 tractor with 37 hours on it. It has a 60" heavy duty mower deck, 410 loader, R4 tires and a canopy on the ROPS. Mint condition. The only draw back is that it is the gear model not hydro. This is why I'm hesitant because of the Gear drive, and no backhoe available. I'll probably never mow with it just loader, landscaping and moving snow. The price is $11500.00 firm. Do you feel it would be possible to get this out of it on a trade if I don't like the Gear drive. I must make up my mind as he is holding it for me.

So, Peter, where do you get good replacement blades? I'm doing finishing work rather than brush hog cutting, but I do note that sharp blades make a big difference to the appearance of the cut. I'm pulling a 5' Brush Hog ATH600 which came used with blades so dull the cutting surface was curved. The dealer gave me a set of not-so-used replacement blades, and I first put just a semi-sharp edge on them thinking to avoid blade damage. That gave me uneven cutting, so I put a decent edge on before my last job and got much better results. However, after about 6-7 acres I'm back to an edge similar to my first sharpening effort. Is it common to need to sharpen so often? I plan to get an extra set of blades so I can switch off and have a set sharp. Are genuine Bush Hog blades likely to be better than third party stuff? I really don't know if the blades I have now are BH or not. Chuck

Lars, real ballpark pricing on NEW B21 TLB is $23-25K, NEW L35 TLB is $33-35K. Used B20 and B21 TLBs are out there, but hold their value real well. A demo B21 with low hours will go for $19K, and a B20 can easily be $10-15K depending on how hard and long it has been used. Commercial rental yards love these machines, so they are a possibility for used machines. Expect about $30K for a demo L35 with low hours.

Peters, I feel stupid that I hadn't thought of earth worms. I do notice these small mounds more after a rain. I agree that worms would be a good thing for my pasture. Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

Kevin, congratulations on your new toy! Sounds like you negotiated a great price. The 790 is marketed to be the low-price member of the John Deere compact cast. A bare-bones 790 is much less expensive than a 4100, but is only 2WD, manual steering, single-stage clutch with tranny-driven PTO, and no mid PTO. When I compared a 790 equipped with 4WD, power steering, 2-stage clutch, and mid-PTO to a similar 4100 gear tractor the prices were virtually identical. The 4100 gear has a 8F/4R tranny over the 790 with a 8F/2R, but big deal. There may be other small differences in features that I didn't cover also. Are the creature-comforts that much better on the 4100? Your call.

Aldo, kay described it correctly, but sometimes it is hard to pull back straight on the PTO shaft. When mine is hard to remove, it is usually because I can't get the right angle to pull back on. Try rotating the shaft a little also, that might help. The locking collar kay described is at the very end of the PTO shaft and is not obvious if you haven't encountered this type of arrangement before.

TomG, after many hours of practice I can finally get a flat trench bottom with a hoe or excavator, but I'll be dipped if I can effectively explain in words how I simultaneously use the boom, dipperstick, and bucket to accomplish this. Kind of like explaining in words how to swing a golf club - and after many hours of practice I still can't do that well at all. Think I'll stick to backhoes and loaders. :>)

Thanks for your reply. I sometimes clear for trees, hire a excavator to strip, and dig foundation. I would spread gravel, backfill, dig utilities, move lumber, Hire a dozer final grade & topsoil and I would landscape mabe cut my lawn.

Keith, don't know where you are at regarding the backhoe decision these days, but here is a relevent situation that happened to me yesterday. I went behind our new house with the loader and landscape ("york") rake on the tractor to start finish grading the back yard area. This area hadn't been touched since last fall when the septic system and water line went in. There had been a lot of settling (1-2 feet) in the rock-embedded medium-clay soil where the water line trench was and some around the concrete septic tank also. (I should explain for our Southern friends that the frost in our area can get real deep, so we put our water line from the well in at 6 foot depth, as I'm sure our Canadian and New England friends on this board can appreciate.) Now, you can call it paranoia or anal retention or whatever, but I got nervous about the settling around the septic tank, so I took a shovel (aka: very small manual backhoe) and dug down 2 feet to the exit pipe from the septic tank. I was greeted with the pipe at a 30 degree angle headed toward China and effluent (aka: nasty water) leaking out around the tank seal. Called my uncle who had seen the system go in and he comes over (on Memorial day no less) to help assess the situation. Bottom line: about a six foot section of pipe including a 45 degree elbow had settled over 6 inches pulling the top of the pipe out of the tank seal in the process. My uncle says, "I've got 90 minutes before dinner, how fast can you get that backhoe on your tractor?" Result: an hour later we were sipping cocktails, having dropped the rake, put the hoe on the tractor, carefully excavated about 8 feet of septic line, lifted the pipe back where it belonged, put crushed stone and clean sand under and around the pipe and backfilled the 2 foot deep trench. Luckily the pipe had gradually bent, not broken. I was awful glad I had the backhoe, and my uncle, to get that job out of the way fast.

I did a quick web search on acrylic paint thinners. There are a few hits. One is a hazards database where quite a few acrylic paint thinners are listed, but not New Holland. The info gives quite a few different solvents. So, finding one by trial and error may be unreasonable and costly. However, from the paint ingredients you listed, I figure that toluene and xylenes would be good guesses, but they might be hard to get and expensive. I'd try isopropyl alcohol, methanol and ammonia just because they're readily available. You might just ask a dealer what's in the thinner. The can should have contents, hazards and toxicology info on the can. In recent years, solvent costs have gotten so high and disposal problems so large that I don't bother to clean brushes any more. I buy cheap brushes and wrap them in aluminum foil after use if I'm going to use them again in a few days. When they become unusable, I throw them away and buy new ones. Probably better for me not to be working around solvent fumes any more than necessary as well.

Mike not sure what you mean that your deck clogs after mowing. I have a 60" on my 425. The only time I have trouble with it pluging is when the grass is tall & when it is wet. I did unbolt the deflector sheild so I can raise it when in those conditions. It helps alot.

Ok, you have 3 lines, 1 "in" line for loader, 1 "out" line for loader and 1 is "power beyond". You have to have the power beyond to use 3 pt with loader. The S position is when loader is attached, O position is when you remove loader. Manual doesn't say what S and O stand for but I assume S is Shut and O is Open.
I have a Koyker loader but principles for detachement should be the same. Set stand, unhook back pins, slide loader forward to get off tractor and and then move hydraulic block lever to O then unhook hoses. Then lastly back tractor out from loader completely.(Thats my process) If you happen to unhook hoses in S position you will notice that tractor is under load and this is when block could get damaged. So the key is to move the lever to O before unhooking hoses.
Hopefully your loader has quick couplers, if not you will want to put them on if you planning on taking loader on and off much. I pull mine off to mow because of all my trees. Once you do it a couple times it goes pretty quick.
If you don't have the manual, you should get one , owners manual is $ 8.00 and Complete service manual was only 29 or 30. Well worth the investment. The service manual goes into all the detail on your 417 loader as well.

Brad, just had the pedal update applied to my 4400 two weeks ago. I love it. I had experienced the same hip and leg fatigue that you described when doing loader work and on the reverse pedal all the time. The new pedals are cast metal and the angle of the reverse pedal makes it much easier to use. No fatigue now. Dealer did it as a warranty update because I complained that the old one was bothering my hip.

Lots of good ideas out there, Dana, but after reading your more detailed plan, I would look for a used TLB like Don M said, but in a smaller size. A used Kubota B20 or B21, or a L35 if you could afford it, would be just about perfect. And they will hold their value. They are sized like compacts, but are built to take the punishment of loader and backhoe work much better. Just think, you could rig up some kind of sling or grapple for the backhoe and just place those Keystone blocks!
