I have located privately owned year old John Deere 4100 tractor with 37 hours on it. It has a 60" heavy duty mower deck, 410 loader, R4 tires and a canopy on the ROPS. Mint condition. The only draw back is that it is the gear model not hydro. This is why I'm hesitant because of the Gear drive, and no backhoe available. I'll probably never mow with it just loader, landscaping and moving snow. The price is $11500.00 firm. Do you feel it would be possible to get this out of it on a trade if I don't like the Gear drive. I must make up my mind as he is holding it for me.

Make sure to read the "I Did It" thread also from today. I think the poster is talking about a new 4100 with FEL, and he's only paid $11,000 but with a rear mower instead of a belly mower. You better ask him to be sure.

37 hours isn't even broken in yet, and the mid-mount mower is considerably more expensive than a 3-point mower, but why is the owner wanting to sell it? Did he learn that he should have bought a hydro transmission for lawn mowing and front end loader work? ....

Larry, I have a JD4100 with a gear tranny and 410 loader. I have about $12,800 into this (new) plus about $1600 for a mid-mount mowing deck. So yes the tractor is definately a good buy. Would you be happy with a gear tractor? That's more or less a personal decision. I'm happy with mine and it does everything I need to do with a compact tractor. Would a hydro be more conveniant sometimes? Yes. But for me it was not worth an extra $2000 in cost. The gear model performs all the same functions and becomes second nature to use once you get accustomed to it. You should certainly be able to resell without loss at the price you are getting. The 4100 is a very impresive tractor for its size class and the quality of construction is very evident. Very few problems are reported with this model (100% built and assembled by Yanmar). ....
