Last summer I bought a new JD 425 lawn & garden tractor with the Deere 54 inch mower, to mow my one acre lawn. The tractor is fine, but the mower deck clogs up after mowing, and I've really had it. What gives?

Mike not sure what you mean that your deck clogs after mowing. I have a 60" on my 425. The only time I have trouble with it pluging is when the grass is tall & when it is wet. I did unbolt the deflector sheild so I can raise it when in those conditions. It helps alot. ....

I have a 425 with the 54" deck and thick, wet grass does like to jam it up [as well as causing the deck to make some interesting noises]. Although I have not tried it with the 425, I have removed the deflector on my other riding mower which helped considerably, but not completely. Note that this can be a bit dangerous if there are people, animals or windows nearby. ....

Mike, I have had a JD430 with a 60 inch deck for about 15 years (had a JD420 before that)and it has always done a pretty good job except in wet conditions. I have had to get under there and scrape it out after mowing real wet grass a couple of times. One thing I did was I removed the deflector and that really made a difference in that it let the mower throw the grass clear. I removed the deflector not long after I got it due to it bogging down the mower (same problem you have)and it seemed I always had it tied up to get into tight spots anyway (that thing was pretty big). Of course all of the standard warnings and disclaimers apply about removing/altering safety devices but that's what I did and it solved my problems. Great mower. ....

I've had several of these units come in trade over the years and found the same as you for mowing in central NY they just didn't do it for the owners. Found that several had the front of the deck to high and they were cutting with the back of it. Did help them mow better to remedy this problem check yours. ....
