i let brother in law barrow my tractor-98 TC33. He cut his 3 acrea field with it, I went over to his house a noticed he had the grille and radiator grille completly plug with grass and stuff. I know he probably overheaded or got it hot becuase I now when I cut my yard I keep an eye on it and when it gets pluged it will run hotter. He had plugged way more thtn I have ever seen it. This is my only complaint with this tractor. I checked the rad fluid and it was low about a half gallon. I haven't talked to him yet so I don't know exacly how hot it was. My question is how much damage could have been done? It started up and ran fine. Are these forgiving tractors when ran hot? What should I check for? I did not see any coolant in the oil.

As a rule no diesel engine is forgiving when ran hot. But they can with stand some heat with out worry or damage. How much is up to the age and hours on the unit. If it runs nice and smooth, no hard starts, dose not smoke abnormally, and as long as the temp dose not go in to the red you should be alright. ....

The unit has 1400 hours and runs fine. I had topped off the coolant and ran for about 2 hours cutting my grass didn't heat up or use any coolant. I checked the coolant after it cooled down and it didn't use a drop. I think i am ok now. ....

Good to hear. But you do have an underling problem some where the cooling system is closed so if you lost it once more than likely you'll lose it again just keep you eye on it. With those hours it sounds like that tractor had a good long life so far. But if well cared for it will have an even longer life. ....

I'd check the engine oil periodically for coolant, check the hose clamps and maybe get a new rad cap on general principle. A 98 likely is too new for internal separation of the hoses to be very likely but maybe new hoses too, although I probably wait and see if the problem reoccurs. Clogged rad was probbly the problem. ....

I have been keeping an eye on everthing and put another 2 hours of cutting grass. I have now noticed it is running hotter than it did before. It no runs on the first line of the last green box, It never got up that high unless the grille and screen was stating to get plugged up. That was always the point that I knew to stop and clean it off but now I noticed it rises just past that point and drops a little, when it drops is when the thermostat is opening. I checked with the cap off and compared when the coolant began to flow. Is my t/stat bad now? And what relly makes me nervous is that it doesn't seem to have the power in 3 gear(HST) that it had before. Where does your gauge read when warmed up? ....

After running an engine that hot I would replace the thermostat that diverts the coolant to the radiator. Its a cheap part and may have been damaged during the "hot spell" it may subsequently reduce your current working temperature as well. ....
