I am a homeowner with a little over 12 acres of land--mostly wooded. I'm wanting to buy a tractor for things such as mowing (finish mower), light grading, yard mainteneance, etc., and would like to find a tractor with a front end loader to suit my needs. I intend to purchase another 45 acres in the near future, and plan to use the tractor to landscape various areas of the property. What type and size of tractor would most likely suit my needs? I want enough power, but at the same time don't want to spend the money for *too* much tractor. Thanks!

Hello Jonathan, I have also 12 acres of land with six open and six woods; I also live on a large lake. When I was looking at buying a tractor to replace my 8N (which I still have) I wanted a tractor that would be able to do what the 8N did. I only looked at the New Holland tractors. The TC models.
The TC24 was a bit small and the TC40:TC45 were just too big for my needs. Then I looked at the TC29 it seemed to be the right size, but for a little bit more money and HP I bought the TC33D with FEL. I have only had it for a month and I love it, it has snowed three times and I have used my tractor and six foot scraper to move the snow, of which I have about one mile of road I maintain and it was just a hell of allot of fun doing it. If your looking at using the tractor around trees I would look at the SS TC_ _ tractor; it will add about $900.00 more to your final price, and you may on the other hand won't need it (I don't). I am taking that saved money and I am buying a tiller and a woods pull behind mower. What you need to do is take a look at the different tractors try them out, then make a list of the pro's and con's of the tractors you like and get one. I would stay around the 29 to 40 HP. good luck, and come back and post what you have when you get one.

Jonathan, as long as you stay in the CUT (Compact Utility Tractor) series you will not buy too much tractor for your 45 acres. I have found a key number is 30 PTO HP. That takes between 35 and 40 gross HP. Once you reach that level it opens up a whole range of implements for use with your tractor. If looking only at NH I would advise on the TC40. If you were staying with your present 12 acres, I would echo Kris' advice with the TC33. It is a great tractor for that size property. A popular option today are the Korean tractors. A Century, Kioti, Mahindra or Branson can give you a lot of bang for the buck. They are very reliable and very well made. With ANY tractor, be happy with the dealer. It is very important.

Jonathan, take a look here if you live in NC. They are in Newton NC. They sell used and new tractors (New Holland) and they have many used foreign tractors. They also sell on ebay.

Thanks for the link, Kris. I've been posting under the John Deere section and thus haven't checked replies to this page in a bit. I'm learning more as I go, and hopefully in time I'll be able to make an informed decision.

Nice to meet you, Kris! I completed my degree in Civil Engineering w/Construction Option (basically, a full CE degree with another year or so of business and law courses). I currently work as a consulting engineer in the western, NC area. Are you originally from NC/still make your home here? (I assume by your name that you do!) ....

I have the TC29D its good....I have had it about a year some things I have found... Dont expect to do too much digging with the front loader. It is great for moveing topsoil, mulch , snow, gravel..etc. I also run a 5ft brush hog from time to time and this is when I wish I had the TC33D or the 35D thought the 35 physical size bigger. PTO horse power is a big thing, hydro-stat drive is veery nice but it takes away from the over all power of the machine and is REAL load in the cold months till it warms up... Just some things I have found.. ....

Hello Jonathan, I have lived in North Carolina for about 11 years;I was born in New York. I am planing on going back to college for my PhD in Botany at NC State. I will be teaching high school sciencee next school year. I love North Carolina its just like up-state New York. Jonathan have you tried any tractors out yet? and what are you looking at?

I have a 33 with SS. I have 15 ac of land. If I had 45 ac I would of gone with a 40 with SS. But my main concern was more of ground maintainance. So getting a good yard cut and around a lot of trees was more important. ....

I have ten acres of rugged desert land. I decided to by the large frame because I wanted the FEL capacity of the larger tractor. Once that decision was made, I went with the 45 HP FWD because of the New Mexico altitude and terrain. It does not really cost all that much more for the larger engine once you settle on the frame size that you need. I have had my tractor for about 8 months and I am completely satisfied. ....
