I'm new to this subject so be easy on me. I'm looking for a tractor to be used to maintain a full size baseball field (legion level 16-19 year old boys) I have come across a 1210 with a few attachments and it seems to be a good size machine. It is a 1988 with 440 hrs is this a good machine or should I pass? I need to get a belly mower for it, it has a brush hog that I can't use is one available? The machine will be used to cut grass, drag the infield york rake and then screen, tow a trailer with dirt, things such as this. We have used lawn and garden style tractors and they just don't last very long. If someone has a machine I'd be very interested also. The other thing is of course we are very budget constrained as most youth organizations are everyone has time to watch the game but no one has time to fund or fix the field.

Thanks

If the size fits your needs, it is a fine tractor. However, you will find some parts issues. A belly mower would be expensive. A rear finishing mower would be cheaper and a whole lot less frustrating. ....

I can't really say anything about the tractor, Just commenting on the belly mower vs Rear mount finish mower. Agreed the rear mount mower is cheaper, however you would have to remove it a lot to tow the trailer, rake, tow trailer, etc. If you can afford it/find one used cheap then I would go with the
belly mower. ....

You need to check that the 1210 has a mid PTO to run the mower. It will be difficult with out it. ....

True it will have to be removed to tow a trailer. But the trailer will have to be removed to use the rake. The rake will have to be removed to... This is a two minute task at most. The belly mower is very difficult to remove and line up. It is also difficult to use with some applications and probably need to be removed. Ground clearance is limited and any PTO applications would make it annoying to disconnect the belly mower. Almost all after market belly mowers hook to the rear PTO. Come to think of it, the most belly mowers mount on the rear 3pt hitch. This would require complete disconnecting anyway. ....

Peters and Marklugo,
True if you have to hook up the belly mower to the rear PTO. I was assuming a mid PTO, which that tractor may not have. If the belly mower hooks up to a mid PTO and does not impede the rear hitch, I do not believe it would be a problem leaving it on for the rest of the field maintenance activities.

Upon refelction I do doubt that that tractor had a mid PTO, but cannot say for sure.

Mid mount belly mowers that run off Mid Mount PTO's are generally proprietary. This tractor is 15 years old and such equipment just isn't available new and darn hard to find used. ....

Thanks for the help guys this is a great forum.
We really want the mower under the tractor, just for the reasons given, the hooking and un-hooking as well as the problem with the deck swinging wide on every turn. I can envision all kinds of damage to the mower and the fences from the deck. The tractor is in great shape it even has a chipper that comes with it but we want the deck under the tractor.

Does anyone have a recommendation on another unit. I have read some scary things about kubota on the site and that was the next option.

Thanks again ....

MTHammer,
Don't be scared off of the Kubota's by the one or 2 threads. The praise threads far outweigh the bad threads, and there are a lot of them out there. And no I am not a Kubota owner, but everyone I know that has one seems to be satisfied with them.
Just don't try to expect too much out of a small model as with any brand.
Good luck.

I would look for something like a good JD 766-855-955 that all came with the mid PTO. The post below which I picked off the classifieds had one and are relatively close to you. Their prices look good but you would need to look at the equipment. They have a 1220 with the mid mower and a 950 with the mid mower listed. I would not be afraid of either machine if they have not been abused. Hope this helps.
