My Dad's old phone would only work with the earpiece plugged in, no sound if unplugged.

There are switches of some sort that can get dirty and or stuck.

The cure was to remove the battery, then dip the plug in rubbing alcohol, shake excess, then insert to free up the switches, let dry and it works!

My understanding of it was that, like airplanes, cell phones use the same logic, less 'stuff' means less weight and easier to make compact.

In most cases the plug merely spreads two little metal tabs, in doing so that opens the circuit to the speaker.

Eventually dirt would get in there and keep the parts from touching. Try one of those cans of compressed air for you computer.

Best of luck. ....
