I have 2 AC battery tenders & 2 solar battery tenders.
I think I read somewhere that AC ones will eventually bring up a battery to full charge but will take a long time.
A solar battery tender will only maintain a battery at its present level of charge. The battery should be fully charged before hooking up the solar charger.
Am I correct on this?

Auto Restorer magazine did a series on battery maintenance charger in the last six months. IIRC you are basically correct, but *some* AC maintenance chargers will not fully charge a battery either. Most of them seem to indicate in the directions whether they can or can not bring a battery to a full charge from a weakened state. Those that can desulfate the plates are more probably more likely to. It would be a good idea to do your online research at the manufacturer web site for any specific model before buying.
