I have a JD4300 Compact Diesel Tractor that has a steering problem and I am looking to confirm my diagnosis. I believe the power steering pump may be going out. When it idles at 900-1000rpm I can not turn the steering wheel without a lot of force. If I throttle it up to 1500 or more it seems to turn back and forth just fine. The three point arms work fine and seems like the hydraulic system is ok. I changed the hydraulic filter and that made no changes. Looking for any suggestions or ideas anyone may have before I invest in a new steering pump. Thanks for any responses.

They use a double pump system mounted on the side of the engine. The bigger half of the pump takes care of the three point, remote cylinders, power beyond, and probably something else I've forgotten.
The smaller half of the pump takes care of steering, brakes, PTO clutch, and some pressure transmission lubracation. If your tractor is a 12/12 power reverser transmission the steering pump also keeps pressure to the clutches for forward and reverse.
So now beside the steering problem do the power brakes work normally, the PTO will engage normally? If the other functions I mention work normally and the power steering is not then perhaps there is a collapsed steering hose or pinched steel line restricting the flow untill enough pressure from the higher engione RPM's overcme.
Lots of other possabilitys too, but thes come to mind right now.
Frank. ....

The only brand I know is Yanmar, where it's invariably the PS cylinder that needs resealing rather than the pump that needs replacing. And that might be a Yanmar under your hood. ....

Just a thought. Have you checked the pickup screen? I think I recall the steering is the last thing to get oil. I'd take a look at the screen and or the filter also. ....
