My battery light on the TC40DA is on. The battery is 6 years old but I do not think that is the problem. It starts right up and runs with no issues. Checked all the connections. When I engage the PTO the gages on the dash will drop, Temp back to cold, RPM gage will drop to zero. Disengage the PTO all gages go back to normal. Is this an alternator issue.

Jep;
Does the battery seem to stay up after lots of repeated startings?
If so then I don't think you have an alternator issue. Your symptoms seem on the order of a grounding issue somewhere that you haven't found yet. guages don't take much juice, but a bad ground messes them up.

If you mean start up yes it starts right up. The Battery light just start staying on 2 days ago so I would assume their is a enough of a charge in the battery for now. I probably have started it a dozen times since the light started to come on when the tractor is running. ....

Jep;
I'm not going to go much further here, my electrical knowledge wouldn't light much of a warning light. I had several Case farm tractors with plastic fuel tanks, the guages usually worked for a couple years after the tractors were new, then quit. The senders were never bad just a bad ground, but not always the easiest to find.
Maybe a Ford/NH owner could guide you further here.

I'm going to start this off by saying I know pretty much ZERO about a JD's electrics.

The fact though that all your gauges are acting up leads me to believe that the problem is a relatively minor electrical issue in the panel itself.

In fact it may be related to the safety switch for the PTO since you said that engaging it or disengaging it is the triggering event.

If you have a bad connection (likely a ground as Frank suggested) then yes, the 'batttery' light would come on because it was sensing no voltage.

I'd start by checking every fuse and all wiring connections and ground points, make sure everything is clean and making a really good contact.

Best of luck. ....

Well I still have the problem & have not been able to find what the issue is. I checked and replaced all the fuses, tested and cleaned the relays, checked all the grounds that I could find, tested the battery and alternator. Problem still there. In addition to the above problem my cruise control and the hi/lo does not work. I guess I will be sending the tractor to the shop this winter if I don't get lucky and find the problem. At least the tractor seems to be running fine. ....

Didn't mean to hijack the thread, my apology's.

Ok, back to the problem.

First thing you want to do is check the system to see if you have a bad sensor telling the battery light to come on when it shouldn't, or you really do have a charge or battery problem.

If you have a digital multimeter, but it across the battery itself after the tractor has been unused for a while, you should have ~12.5 volts.

Now, start (or have someone start it for you is better) the tractor with it set to as slow an idle as it will go, and right away measure across the battery again. It should still be at least 11.5 volts.

Now bring the idle up to about 1,500 rpm and once again measure across the battery, you should now have at least 13 volts, 14.0 - 14.5 is even better.

Best of luck. ....

I tested the battery and it is holding a charge of 12.5v. I will try the other test also. Would the battery or alternator be causing the issue with the cruise, hi/lo and gauges. ....

My guys used to like joking that we couldn't use JD's or we'd never find them after they broke down out on the turf. LOL

Best of luck.

Murf;
The joke around here used to be that the JD's were painted green so they could hide in the grass while the Farmalls went past.
I got to thinking about what we might get if we crossed a John Deere with a Ford/NH. Oh my, then we might create a "SUPER EW" with some green blood in his veins.
Sorry if I'm becoming sort of a nusance poster, but I'm laid up with a bad foot with orders to stay in till it gets better.

With all the complicated electricals these blues have, I think I would look at the relays under the fairing (on mine it's on the right) and possibly the diodes (most likely you have them). On my blue (actually yellow) skid steer I had a diode fry which fried a relay which fried the $400 instrument panel assembly. I would go to www.messicks.com and look up your tractor electrical. It shows all components and their locations. Very, very helpful. Messicks is the only site I found that has not only a drawing of the parts, part number and cost, but also tells how many are required on the machine. Example: the same relay P/N may be used 3 or 4 places.

Unlikely, but a few tractors signal low battery fluid, so make sure it's up. Because of the other symptoms and your testing of the battery it's probably something else, but a battery heading for its seventh north-east winter in a diesel is due for replacement. ....
