I am looking to buy a 4710 JD compact tractor. I have found one that has 1950 hours on it. After talking with a JD mechanic I was disapointed to find out that that is a lot of hours for this model. And that this engine is a throw away motor! Can anyone confirm this for me?
Thanks,
Jim

I can confirm that the mechanic is wrong on both counts.

It will need more than an oil change and valve adjustment likely at 5-10k hrs, which should be reflected in the price. ....

I'd say to look at the fact that the average on compact tractors is closer to 100 hrs a year and he was saying that for the years on the tractor, it has a lot of hours on it!

Throwaway engine, that depends as anything can be fixed, it's just sometimes the costs for the repair makes it hard to justify over new. We only rebuild a few compared to years ago because many manufacturers offer rebuilts for less then they can be done on a 1 on 1 basis.

I'd say it still would only be pushing at it's half life of 5000 hours with marginal maintanence. The larger problem with them seems to be the electricals. ....

Jvroot11,

I agree with Auerbach.

The JD 4710 has a very dependable Yanmar engine in it. Under normal operating conditions and maintenance, it should last well over 5000 hours without any trouble.

That mechanic you spoke with is full of....ummmm....dung.

Art White,

It's safe to say that it has a lot more hours on it than the average tractor of its age, but the average homeowner should easily be able to get another 30 years of useful service out of it.

As you say, most of the service issues will be electrical in nature. I wouldn't question the engine, however.

Jvroot11,

Here's a link to Yanmar's site and the engine used in the JD 4710.

It's a very durable and dependable engine. It's used to power all kinds of equipment.
