Hi.
I have an older 6x4 gator and it was running on idle and all of a sudden it died, turned the key and the starter was going but not the engine. Is there a timing belt maybe or is it dead now?
thanks

Your 6x4 needs two things to run, spark and gas. Pull the gas line off at the carb, stick the end in a bottle, and turn the key to the run position. You shoud hear the fuel pump running and be getting fuel in the bottle. Next pull a spark plug, put the plug wire back on, ground the plug base to the motor and hit the starter. You should have a blue spark between the electrodes on the plug. Your Gator will run on one cylinder, so if it's electrical the problem is somewhere that is common to both cylinders. ....

When you say "the engine does not do anything" it's really not specific enough to help. When the starter turns does it engage and spin the engine? Or does it just run freely? ....

When the starter turns, does the flywheel turn? If the flywheel doesn't turn you need a new starter drive clutch and a stop kit. If the flywheel turns and the pistons don't go up and down, you have a major problem. ....

A few possibilities and the first step should probably be to pull the starter. The starter solenoid may not be working, or be stuck, or the starter teeth could be chewed up. If the teeth are messed up then the flywheel could be damaged too. ....

Don't know which motor you have, but on a lot of the small 12 volt starters when you hit the starter switch the kick of the starter causes the starter gear to move out on the starter shaft and engage the teeth on the flywheel. The gear runs on a threaded starter shaft. The inertia of the starter gear causes it to start slow compared to the shaft so it screws itself out. When the engine starts or the flywheel turns faster than the starter gear in spins in back in. The starter gear may be dirty or stuck on the shaft. There is normally a rubber boot that covers the threaded shaft. You'll probably have to remove a few sheet metal guards to see it. ....

Hi, Im new here looking for a solution to something totally different but have seen similar problems. The engine in question 18 hp kawi twin originally came through with a plastic cam gear, couple hundred hour failure. Your pistons dont move, yay... not your problem. Starter in question runs? Three choices but they are all the same design. Electro mechanical engagement and trigger. Solinoid needs to fully retract to engage the contacts. Yours runs. There is a rubber to steel clutch to protect the flywheel from damage. Lots of stop and go such as mucking barns in a cold climate? They either seize or slip? hope that helps. ....
