Question to all you veteran tractor operators. When operating - running the loader: scooping and dumping, etc, is it best to run at constant RPM or is the proper way to vary the RPMs by setting the throttle at low idle and using the foot pedal to run? I am asking for reasons of fuel efficency, less wear on the clutch and to determine overall what is the best way to operate the tractor. Any insight would be appreciated. By the way, depending on my mood I run both ways.

Markpee,

Engine RPMs greatly affect the speed of operation of the loader. The higher the RPMs, the faster the loader and bucket will operate.

For snow removal, where speed is the priority, I use high RPMs. For garden work, where delicate operations are required, I use a lower RPM setting.

For those who clean barn stalls and feeding pens, it might be best to use a lower RPM in order to avoid running the tractor into a gate, or a wall.

Generally speaking, I use high RPMs when working in wide open spaces so that I can get a job done quickly. In confined areas, it's best to use lower engine RPMs in order to avoid doing damage to either property or the tractor.

With a gear tractor I always use the foot throttle and vary the RPM's as needed for loader work.
Running higher RPM's all the time causes unnessasary wear and tear on the clutch and makes the tractor harder to control.
My opinion. ....

I'm just re-learning all this stuff too after being away for many years. I recently bought a JD 990 and use the throttle for pasture work (rolling, fertilizer spreading and soon cutting). This evening I just dug out a bunch of shrubs so I can level an area and put in a swing set for my daughter. I kept the throttle low RPM and used the foot pedal to dig. I found I had better control over the tractor and could get the torque working when I wanted it. Like the other poster, just my opinion. ....

My experience with late-model New Holland machines is they recommend running at or near full-throttle for best efficency. But my stuff is all hydrostatic. ....

I would agree that if your tracrtor is a hydro drive you need to keep you throttle at near full RPM especially on heavy drawbar work of if pushing real hard with the loader. Wiuth a gear I run about 2/3 throttle but don't use the foot throttle doing anything. I never thougth that the little small dispacement engines were meant to run at low rpm's. Frank. ....

With a hydro machine you are pretty much required to run a constant rpm to function efficiently. On a gearshift tractor I agree with Vince to vary the rpms as required for loader or other work. In some cases you must maintain rpms constant with pto driven equipment with any tractor. ....
