I would like to know if anyone has been able too lock the front Differential. I use Mattracks and locking the front in snow on steep grade is necessary to get the traction available.

My RTV had no provision for locking the front axle and I haven't seen any aftermarket gizmo's for that upgrade.

Have you actually run the Mattracks yet? I would have guessed that the RTV didn't have enough power at the wheels to use them effectively. ....

Yes I've used the Mattracks for two seasons beginning season 3. I use the vehicle to get to my home at 3300 feet elevation. It is a 1000 foot climb over 1.5 miles. Snow average for a season is 16 feet. It has never been stopped in as much as 28" of new snow. It aint fast but sure is steady. The Tracks give it a 30% gear reduction have plenty of power. Would like to lock the front end so it will perform better. On steep terrain in deep snow I back up the hill and it never quits. I could weld the gears but not a good option. ....

That 30% gear reduction explains a lot.

My RTV got stuck very frequently in snow and soft sand. It also did not help that I live a mile above sea level.

I wonder if the front axle has some common parts with the rear axle? If so maybe you could adapt the existing locking mechanism. ....

Perhaps you could split the front brakes off and have independent control for both, that way you could toggle from the track that is spinning to one with traction. Not as good as a locker but similar to anti-spin or the current versions of traction control. ....

That is an excellent idea. I saw that mentioned in specs for one of the ATVs where a hand brake is employed as posi-traction control.
TNX ....
