Sorry. Are you sure the noise is in the engine? ....

The cause could be fuel contamination.

Proper ignition in a diesel engine requires several factors, compression, heat (caused by the compression) and a suitable amount of fuel delivered at the right time. If one or more of those factors changes, or is absent altogether, either poor or no ignition at all will result.

Anyone who has experienced the difference a bottle of good quality additive (Power Service, etc.) has made to the sound level and performance of a diesel knows what I'm talking about.

If something happens, such as some contaminants going through the fuel system, changes the cetane rating of the fuel it's very likely to retard the ignition enough to cause a serious amount of noise more than normal.

Best of luck. ....

As the old saying goes .... "If" is the biggest little word in the English language.

"If" that is the problem, yes it will go away. I run the recommended dosage of Power Service (the white bottle) in all my diesels all the time, it makes a noticeable difference.

If it is contaminated fuel, and it has gotten as far as the injectors, you will have to clean the whole system out. Water in particular will not just get flushed out from running the engine.

You didn't say if the knock went away or it was there for the 2 hours you ran it?

Best of luck. ....

Well dont know what happened, maybe it was contamination, son-in-law went down and cranked it and heard the noise, shut it down and cleaned all the debris from around the engine and radiator and noise went away, what should i do next, change the oil?? or just run it a while and see what happens, oil probably has maybe 10 hours on it, thanks for your help! ....
