So, I went to install my vertical exhaust, 'cause I cant stand the exhaust blowing in my mouth. There is a dpression in the side panel for the exhaust to go through. The hood however only has two lines inside the hood that rest on either side of the pipe when the hood is closed. My question is, has anyone installed a vertical exhaust? Should I cut the hood? If you've done it, what seems to be the best way without making it look like a botch job? Please help.

Yup you have to cut the hood.
I did my 4400 for the same reason.
The instructions that come with the kit are good.
Use the highest speed with the finest blade you can get. Tape both sides.
Good luck Harvey
PS I can post a temp pic if you want to see the result. ....

Where does the standard exhaust on the 4300/4400 exit? On the 4310 it is a forward facing exhaust low on the left side but I haven't noticed much exhaust in my face. ....

Low and on the left. I did install the vertical today, and did some work without the hood on. What a big difference with the vertical. BTW, was someone on your tractor when it rolled? ....

Yep, I was! It was on soft ground and the ground under the left side slowly gave way and the tractor went over. The loader arm hit a tree and the tree slowed the roll quite a bit. A little battery acid leaked but otherwise no harm done on man or machine, not even a scratch. It was pretty exciting, though, and not something I'd want to do again. ....

I am sure you will like the vertical much better. I will never own another with the exaust down and out front. Gave me throbbing headaches. Very rarely do I get a whiff of exaust now.
I will see if I can find them. I've had the vertical on for 4 or so years now. Only problem is low tree limbs. The exaust should have a bracket for support.
I'll look and see so hold tight. Have some Xmas parties to attend tonight and then just gotta chase some yotes tomarrow am.
Just checked I do have the instructions and template cut outs. Do you have a fax? Let me know either way.
I did not check, JD site, but the instruction sheets and photos are numbered LVU11556GO (7/26/00), MX2860, MX63786a, MX2862, MX2865.

That bracket supports the muffler and does not help with low limbs.
DO YOU HAVE A FAX? IHAVE ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS.
I can scan but being on dial up the pics will take an hour or better to send.
I'm spo-ta-B hunting coyotes right now but got moving late so will go out late morning for different set up.

Be careful using a faxed template! Generally speaking, any template that is not made by the exposure method like a blue- or sepia-print where the original is directly contacting the exposure media, it will not be the same either in length or width, or both. I used to design and make paper templates for GM and we found out the hard way that after making just two generations of xerox copies for car door drilling templates for dealers they were off by as much as 1/2". Old fashioned blueprints were the only way. ....

As far as limbs catching the exhaust pipe, I saw a system in a construction magazine that featured a break-away or rather a bend-away pipe that was spring loaded at the base. It was for backhoes and loaders. ....

I have 3 different templates with this. Musta had the original sheet in wrong side up. Will resend.
I thought the original looked HUGE. I do believe that was the one I ended up using. It needs plenty of clearance. Mine has some signs of heat around the hood.
I have a cheap fax for sending and can't remember which side is up. Sent both sides of template.
You might wanna go back and edit your fax #. Just Thinkin.

Thanks so much Harvey. Got it. The fax is fine. As long as I have an idea of how big the hole is supposed to be, I'll be fine. Just gotta make it look pretty. Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it. Let me know if I can help you out someday.

I have a vertical exhaust for a 4310 in the box that i never installed. If someone on theis list would like to buy it i would make them a good price for it. I was going to get one for my 3520 but it takes a large hole in the top of the hood and the best i can tell you have to remove the exhause somehow just to raise the hood so i never bought one for it. Anyone have this onn their 3520? ....

You should put the one for the 4310 on ebay. You can sometimes get ridiculous prices for things. Even if you get something though, at least it won't be laying around collecting dust. ....
