Hello,
I'm new to JD, thinking of buying a used 4300 nearby. The range
selector lever has become disconnected from the shaft. The seller
says the shaft has "fallen" in the tranny case. Is there any way of
getting the shaft out without splitting the case? If the case needs
to be split, any idea what it might cost at the dealer? Thanks,
Mark

It is likely the shifter forks not the shaft, but I am not sure where the range selector is the 4300. Many of the gear tractor have a inspection plate at the top of the gear box you can remove and tighten the shifter forks back on the shaft. On my MF I can get at the range selector shaft from the top inspection plate. ....

What the owner probably means is he broke the range shifter fork and IT or one-half of it fell in the transmission. A good service manager should be able to tell you what it would take $-wise. There may be a quick fix or a not-so-quick (read: expensive). Ask the owner how it happened and that will help the service guy give a better diagnosis. And if you decide to buy it, I wouldn't just offer him a price minus the dealer work for the shifter as there may be other problems. Just like cars, if the fix is that easy or cheap why didn't the current owner get it fixed? Or like when you see brand new tires on a used car for sale---why? To hide the worn out parts and costly alignment. ....

I'm with earthworks on this one - if you are not sure whats wrong and can't test drive the machine RUN. If you like the 4300 you should be able to pick one up from a local dealer, the $500 to $1000 they will tack on to will look like a bargain once you have spent $$$ to find out that something else will cost even more to fix. ....

The range selector was apparently intentionally forced and has broken the linkage or shaft that goes ito the tranny case. Dealer says about $1500 to fix.

I'm just wondering, the questions that come to mind, who was operating, why it broke, was it abused all it's life, what will be the next? How many hours are on this tractor? What do the tires look like, are they right for the hours? How's the sheet metal look? ....
