JD specs show that the 3520 is the same engine size as the smaller 3120, the only diff being it is turbo charged. Anyone know anything about the rerliability of a turbo Yanmar engine. I know with autos it stresses the engine and reduces life. Also, the 3320 has a larger non turbo engine. Would this model be a better choice? Thanks

I don't know anything specifically about turbo Yanmar engines but these days turbos are extrememly reliable and these engines are built like tanks so I wouldn't worry about it. It's important with turbos to let it have a good idle cooldown period before shutting it off to prevent the bearings from coking up. A non-turbo engine will tend to be a bit more reliable simply because there are fewer parts to break. ....

Years ago when aftermarket turbo kits were the rage there were problems because the engine was never built to handle the extra heat and pressure, but todays factory installed turbos are almost trouble free. I owned several farm tractors in the past with turbos and never spent a dome on one. As was said the cool down idle is important, long as you do that I would'nt be a bit concerned about buying one. How long would you let the tractor cool down?

I'd say about 5 minutes if you're working REAL hard, maybe 30 seconds if you're just driving around. A turbo that is working real hard can glow red hot. It's a good idea to let non-turbo machines cool down too for few minutes after a hard run. ....

I appreciate all the feedback. It looks like the entire line of the new 4020 series have turbo charged engines so I
guess John Deere has confidence in them. I think I'll look at buying the turbo 3520 as compared to the non turbo 3120 or 3320. thanks cbookman1 ....

Broad rule of thumb, but turbos are usually a good thing for a 4 stroke cycle diesel. The increased air flow (scavenging) under load helps cool the combustion chamber, result in more complete combustion and sweeps the combustion products out better. Agree that as a power adder to small gasoline engines, they tend to shorten life. But pay attention to cautions about allowing engine a minute or two to warm up and a few minutes to cool down, good for any diesel, but especially to cool the turbo.

PS, I work with 6000-8000 hp turbo-diesels/gensets ....
