A little advice and knowledge requested here. I have a 1967 JD 4020. I think it still has the original 24 volt electrical system. I read somewhere that the starter and alternator run 24 volts but the lights and accessories run 12. I want to put in a cab heater but don't know if I should get a 12 or 24 volt heater.

Didn't know that about Deere. If it has two batteries and you're getting a water heater, the only electrics would be a blower fan so I'd get a 12.
If an electric-element heater, either. If you can find one, 24 would be good. Otherwise I'd draw the 12 out of both batteries together. ....

First off, I think you'll find if your machine is a 24 volt model, you likely have a generator, not an alternator.
But if you have a 24 volt system, and can get a heater with a 24 volt blower, it would be better to go that way. The 24 volt model will draw less current and be easier on that old generator and the batteries.
You should also put a pair of electric battery warmers on that old girl too, it's a bunch easier on them in cold weather, the old generators don't put out a lot of power compared to a generator.
Best of luck. ....

Sage;
I had a 4010 an older model,( 61-62?) sister to your 4020. I do know it had Deere's 24/12 system. The generator and starter were 24 the rest was 12. The early 4010's had no circut breakers so they were famous for as mine did catching fire if a short occured. I'm not sure if any 4020's were 24/12, but as Murf said if it has an alternator it likely is an all 12 system.
