Just took delivery of a new 7510, 302 FEL, loaded R4s and Woods 48" brush hog. Spent an hour cutting some paths through the fields and am quite pleased. I am really looking forward to geting some seat time once the two boys go to bed!

I think this has been mentioned before on other threads, but here goes anyways.

If you are in heavy (clay or sticky) or rocky soil, you may regret using a bucket any smaller than 12".

We have a small bucket for our mini-ex's, it rarely gets used.

In heavy or wet soil it packs full so hard that you nearly have to pick it out with a pry-bar. In rocky soil the trench is so small that there is hardly any room to pick at a rock. Even if the soil is good and you get a 8" or 9" trench dug, it is so narrow that you can't get in it to do any work.

In practical terms, it really doesn't take any longer to dig or backfill a 12" trench than it does a narrower one.

The guys did find one really good use for it though, it's the only thing heavy enough to hold the fire door in the shop open against the hydraulic closer, it creates a nice cross breeze in the shop on warm days.

Ken, you're close, but not quite right, Murphy's Law would be holding on to it for 22 years then having everything BUT that clutch fall apart.

I am not talking about those cheesy "backhoes" made for skidsteers that are only a boom and bucket, operated from the SS driver's seat. I am referring to real hoe attachments with their own seats. As for the strength of a CUT front loader, they seem to be designed to take quite a bit of stress, and both 3pt and subframe rear mounts usually hang a hoe pretty far out back. Note that the real hoes used on skid steers are just mounted to their loaders.

I bought my user manuals off Ebay for about $10-15 each.
They come up often. I have had JD955s, which share many components with the 655, 755, 855. Do a search for "deere 855". These tractors were made approx 86-96.

As for price, 10.5K for an 855 in primo condition with nice
attachments may not be out of line. It had better be sweet,
however.

Try a tow-behind leaf sweaper. You can even use it while mowing. Those units are cheap, but can be frustrating to use due to light-duty construction and easy clogging. BUT... as long as you're only interested in compost material and not a spotless lawn, it would be a very cost effective alternative. They are ground wheel driven, so plan on adding weight with cinder blocks to help it work better.

I've had my 790 for 3 years with 171 hours on it, used primarily for snow removal, brush hogging and turning over a manuare pile. I have no problems getting on/ off the machine (I'm 5"10 and 200 pounds) the only thing I wish I had gotten was a shuttle shift - so that I could move from forward to reverse w/o having to push in the clutch. Not a major issue, but a nice to have. No problems at ALL with the machine. Good luck!

I have a ballast box. It works well for my needs. Ifirst used crushed stone for weight, the first time I tried to reattach it to the tractor it all but killed me. I emptied it and then used bags of gravel,so I could take the weight out quicly,and or adjust the weight for different tasks.

Greetings all, this too is my first post on tractorpoint.com and I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents worth on the 4200 purchase issue. I own a 2000 model 4wd JD 4300 with the 430 front end loader. I used it to dredge my pond when it went dry during the drought 2 years ago. On several occaisions I managed to bury it to the front axle in the wet goo that lurked just below the crusty surface of the dried pond. Each time I was able to "walk" it out using the bucket on the front end loader. Just curl the bucket back, press it into the muck, lift the front end out of the muck, and curl the bucket to push the tractor back out of the muck. Continue this process until the rear wheels catch some dry ground and then you are free. Now this probably won't work if both axles are buried, but then a winch may not either. With the wide rear tires and the narrow front tires on this tractor, I have never (yet) encountered a situation where the front wheels didn't get mired first leaving the rear wheels still on top of the goo. Congratulations on your purchase.

It is getting a little old everytime someone has a question about a Kubota, you have to start your bashing because you didn't do enough research to get a tractor that suited you. Most of your complaints with your machine are due to your own fault such as removing the mower deck, removing the loader, and fueling the machine. I find the bar helpful as I set my can on it as I use the pump to fuel the tank. Remember if you don't have anything to add to the topic, keep quiet. I guess you complain because you have to get out of your car to refuel it, I guess that's a poor design too!!!!!

I have 32 acres here in Western PA that I am doing the same things you described wanting to do in your post. I wrestled with the lower budget CUT's idea for several months and was actually close to having made up my mind to purchase one until I went to several dealers (blue-green-orange) and test drove them or had them bring to the property for a demo..

I've posted this before...it's during this process that you really find out what the machine will do. They ALL look good on paper and it's worth the effort it takes to demo them. I opted for the larger TC33D/7308 FEL. It has far surpassed my expectations and has done everything I have asked of it. I have since added homebuilt front forks, a homebuilt ballast box, a homebuilt landscape rake, Woods 5' brush hog and a Woods 84" RFM. This tractor handles them all with ease.

Considering what I have done with my machine and what I experienced testing the smaller one's, I doubt 10k will get you the machine you need unless you can find one used.

WPHILL, my tractor is a JD 4310 with 32 hp. The grapple is a five foot BG-5 and it has impressed the heck out of me. I bought the grapple as part of the package and it was plumbed by the dealer before delivery. It replaces the bucket and uses the loader hydraulics and a third SCV to control the top jaw. Art mentioned another style of grapple that mounts on top of an existing bucket. Those are a workable, lighter and less expensive option but have the disadvantage of picking up dirt with every load and buckets are not nearly as strong as the BG-5.

Frontier brand (sold through John Deere dealers) has box blades, rear blades, rakes, phd's, tillers, spreaders, etc... sized for the sub-CUTs. I'm somewhat surprised that your dealer didn't point you in that direction, mine was certainly pushing the Frontier brand.

I'm far from a small engine mechanic, but as far as I know there are two types of ends on the crankshaft, tapered and keyed. If the engine you are looking at has a tapered shaft and the bolt that goes up the center of the shaft has loosened off, it will allow the whole unit to spin. Likewise, if the key has sheared off there is little to keep the back half of the clutch from spinning.

The key to using a backhoe without causing damage is simply to use it the way it was designed to be used. This is especially true with a small BH as on the B, BX, or similar sized machine. A BH is designed to operate in a straight line. You can push loose material from side to side, but you shouldn't force it sideways against a hard surface. You're more likely to "rack" the digging arm or damage a joint than you are to twist the tractor's frame.

I'm not familiar with that particular model, but the your description sounds like an FST, which does require the use of a clutch.

Stevenc, I would agree 100%. The 4x4 has already come in handy a couple of times. I got hung in a groundhog hole and the 4X4 enabled me to get out without a tow. This tractor (TZ24) also has a rear differential lock, which is an excellent feature. I now have 12 hours on my tractor and feel its one of the better buys for the money.

I bought a CK20 about a month ago, and so far it has been great! I got the manual gear, not the hydrostatic, because I really don't have to shift from forward to backward too often. I mow about 14 acres on a small horse farm with a Woods 48 in. cutter, and even with all the fast grass growth this year, I have had no problems. The front end loader is excellent for moving horse manure as well as piles of fire wood. I have put 45 hours on it so far, so it will have its first oil change and service this weekend. As long as it keeps doing as well as it has, I'd say that it is a great tractor at a reasonable price. I paid $11,500 for 0% for 3 years.
