Size does matter. With a 4-foot rotary cutter behind an appropriately small-size tractor you can probably cut about an acre an hour. If you go up to a 6 or 7-foot mower on a larger tractor you can probably cut as much as two acres per hour. Time is money, so I�d go for the larger set up. My choice to pull a 6 or 7-foot mower would be a tractor in the range of 35 to 40 hp. That size tractor should also be plenty for your other chores.

The next thing to consider is whether or not you want a four-wheel drive tractor. My grandfather farmed for years with a two-wheel drive tractor and never had a problem. But lots of folks are going after four-wheel drive tractors these days because they believe that having four-wheel makes the tractor �act� as if it had more horsepower. They seem to think that means a somewhat smaller tractor and thus a smaller purchase price. But, I�m of the opinion that the premium price that the four-wheel drive adds offsets any savings in going down in actual horsepower. You�ve got to make this call after weighing all the opinions of others like me!

Next, you got to decide whether or not you want a new tractor. I�m a dealer and we carry both new tractors and factory-reconditioned tractors. There are of course pros and cons to each. New usually means they meet all the safety and emissions regs, and they come with longer and more comprehensive warranties. The reconditioned tractors are usually far less expensive, but may not have the whistles and bells the new ones have. Visit a reputable dealer that carries both, ask lots of questions, and drive several to get a feel for yourself.

Either way you decide to go, you�ll want to make sure parts and service are readily available. We carry new Task Master tractors, and sell reconditioned Yanmar and Mitsubishi brands, because we feel they are all top quality products and there is good parts/service availability. Prices are going to vary regionally, but based on what we�re selling tractors for here (Atlanta area) my new 4-wheel drive tractor with a rotary cutter would be just a bit over your budget, and my reconditioned tractors would be well under it.

Price and brand are ultimately subjective answers though. On these two points you�ll have to do your own homework!

The 4310 technical manual lists two possible causes for a slipping PTO. Either the PTO clutch is damaged or worn or there is insufficient oil pressure to the PTO clutch. The latter can be caused by a leaking shaft seal. Either way, it requires removal of the rear PTO drive shaft and gears to get to it.

With that budget for tractor and implements you will have to buy used at auction or similar, I suggest you go for something around the 40 hp range. No lower than 30 hp and probably wont need higher that 50. Any brand will do, just make sure you have a reputable dealer close at hand.

My deck is a 60" MMM (TZ24DA) and the weight is about 260lbs. Yesterday I mowed my 3 acre lot that had previously only been mowed with a bushhog. It took me about 3 hours in 8-12" grass. Tractor did a great job. I do have a couple of problems with the design. The first is there is no indication that the parking brake is set. The other is the front grille collects a lot of grass, as does the radiator grille. However, while mowing in tall grass with high humidity and an air temperature of 85 degrees the tractor did not get hot, temperature stayed well in the green.

I have the Coleman 6hp/27gallon from Costco and it seems like a well made outfit. The price includes an impact wrench, hose and fittings.

I had a smaller Coleman for several years before that and it was totally trouble free.

I just finished up my fifty hour service on my B7800 and went through the same thing. I initially got Deere fluid to put in it but after thinking about it a little decided to go on the hunt for Super UDT. Although I'm sure other fluids would work fine I went with what Kubota recommends for piece of mind. Particularly, if a warranty issue ever comes up I don't want the type of transmission fluid I used to be a potential point of contention (I've heard Kubota can be a little tough to deal with on warranty claims). After the warranty period I may switch to something else but until then I'm sticking with what they spec.

If it is like my RTV, one of the filters replaces the traditional suction screen. Also.... the base of one of my filters has a manifold which circulates coolant from the radiator.

My brother in law has 55 acres and a JD 990 to take care of it. He uses it mostly for rough mowing. He seems to like the tractor but it's not fancy. This might be in your price range if you don't need an FEL. I'm not sure what Kubota or New Holland might be similar.

Happy ending to this story: everyone who replied was right -- the bx23 holds a huge quantity of fluid but has an oversensitive dipstick. All it took was half a quart, and it was fine!

Even better was how nicely the dealer handled it. I bought 2 quarts from their parts window. On the way out my salesman saw me and asked how the tractor was doing. I told him the problem, and he seemed genuinely concerned. Without hesitation, he also got my check out of the parts window register and tore it up. He also stopped the general manager and let him know the problem. Wow! My dealer is great after the sale, too.

I disagree with the "R4's will perform well in all conditions" statement, but agree that if your choice is between turfs and R4s, go with the R4s. R4s stink big time in some clay soils, dry OR wet.

My son and I have a piece of land with about 40 acres of pasture. We will need a tractor to mow and do other chores---perhaps a little snow plowing and hauling and maybe pulling small trees out. We would like something very reliable and have heard that diesels are just that. Any recommendation of what make, model, and year to go after? We have a budget of about $10,000, with a stretch of a little more, if necessary for the tractor and the mower

My 4300 had the same problem. Upon reading the manual JD advises to run the tractor at about 1/3 throttle for a minuite or so before turning off. I leave the throttle at about 1500 rpm and just switch off. I have been doing this and have not had any more problems restarting (same as your problem - turns over fine but seems like there is no fuel - I could crank until the battery gave out). The problem was worst when it was cold and I had turned off the engine after the tractor has at its slowest idle.

You can build a low cost alternative to the hydraulic grapple by buying a skid steer quick attach plate and making four grapple arms (see my pics 1,2,and 5). I built these exactly for piling logs after skidding them to a landing and they worked well for me. They will easily handle 24" diameters or under. <br>

The advantage you have over forks is that you can nicely place logs in a pile instead of letting them roll off the forks. Plus you don't have to get underneith them, you just place the arms around the log, squeeze and lift. I had only about $200 and two evenings of work into the whole thing.<br>

There are alarm systems available, in fact almost any good car alarm system can be easily rigged to work on a tractor or other equipment.

I have seen people rig up simple alarms using a deep cycle RV battery, mtion sensor and a few lights and noise makers. The problem is they often go off from animals or such. People in the area may investigate the first few times but the novelty wears off, as does their patience, real fast. The thieves merely disable the system then wait a little while, go back and help themselves.

This happened to a local municipality near me. They lost 4 trailers completely loaded with turf equipment, total loss was over $200,000 according to the news reports. The thieves merely cut the lock on the gate then cut the wire to the alarm horn, then sat nearby and waited, when nobody came to investigate they hooked up to the trailers and drove away.

Bottom line, locks and alarms only stop honest people.

The reason we hire a security company to provide dogs is simple, no maintenance or liability, the dogs bite someone they sued not me.

On 6-14, the dealer in Lincolnton NC quoted $17070 for the 3130 tractor with the glide transmission and loader (not sure of model). He claims his prices are best around.
