OK, I am zeroing in on what I need here. I bought a small 1'x1' plastic catch basin from home depot for $40. I think I will buy 6" poly pipe at $2/foot with smooth inside wall. There will be adequate pitch. I will have daylight at the exit end of the pipe. I will screen the exit end of the pipe so rodents don't get in there.

I am thinking of buying the solid wall pipe so I don't have to worry about dirt getting in the pipe. And - I don't see any water leeching into trench from surrounding lawn because of high clay content (I see no trench drainage benefit to perforated pipe from nearby lawn along the length of the pipe).

Is there any disadvantage to using solid rather than perforated pipe when pipe is exposed to daylight at exit end? Someone told me a solid pipe could actually lift out of the ground over time! Is that true?

Just picked up a Cosmo 180 3pt PTO driven spreader. It�s the same spreader as is sold under the Landpride, First Choice, and many other labels.<br>

Before I go burn the heck out of the lawn trying to set this thing up, could someone provide advice on setting the spinner vanes. The pitch of the spinner vanes is adjustable to provide balanced coverage when using different types (sizes/weights) of materials. I know how to calibrate the spreader by collecting material in a tarp or multiple trays, but having a starting point of reference would sure help. The Mfg supplies info on gate opening settings but the vane settings seem to be trial and error.<br>
What setting works best for powered lime?<br>
Small granulized fertilizer?<br>
Pelletized fertilizer?<br>
Pelletized lime?<br>

Do most people run the spreader at PTO speed (540rpm)? <br>
Is there a relationship between spread width and PTO speed (i.e. if spread width is 40� at 540rpm will it be 20� at a PTO speed of 270rpm)?<br>
Should the pitch of the vanes change if running at slower PTO speed?<br>

I would have to say pass on this deal. Assuming a 1980 model 2040; the tractor is worth maybe $4,500 - $5,500. Add another $1,000 - $1,200 for the FEL.

I have manual scarifiers which are just fine. Hydraulic ones are a lot more money. If you invest instead in Top-N-Tilt, or at least a hydraulic top link, you can tilt the scraper which gives you some control over the scarifier depth AND the hydraulics are useful on other implements too. You want the box scraper to be a little wider than your rear treadwidth.

I agree it's a little difficult to find online information for Frontier, but your dealer should have brochures. Here's a link I found for it. The main reasons I went with Frontier were iMatch compatibility and it was negotiated into the price of the package, but Land Pride and Woods and other brands are good too.

The piled up rows are mostly whole trees, most not over 6 in. in diameter (and many less). They are a couple feet high, with some sandy soil mixed in. I'll probably use some of them for erosion dams on some washes on this propery and on another property as well. Will probably burn some of it just to get rid of it, but would like to chip some of it as well.
If the main reason to get a bigger tractor is to run a fence post driver, I can rent a portable one from the local rental company.

After putting down the grass seed with a PTO spreader, go back over the whole area and lay down a fine layer of sawdust, it holds moisture and confuses the daylights out of all the birds who think you just converted your lawn into one massive bird feeder.

Then if possible spread another thin layer of shredded, screened topsoil over top of the above.

After all of this roll the whole area to push everything down into contact ith everything else and the earth.

Water well and keep moist until the new grass is at least 1" high.

Frank, the trick is to make it using the same theory as a trailer is based on, it's easier to pull than carry a load.

Hydraulically drive a mower which rides on dolly wheels. If you mounted it on an arm you could give it hydraulically adjustable offset, like the swing of a BH. Then you just go back & forth, each pass moving it further out till you have the desired width cut parallel to your path.

In fact for that sort of work a hydralically driven Mott mower might just be the ticket, and probably a lot sturdier too.

Although you could also make a tool bar with multiple string-trimmer heads along it's length and do the same thing.

The PTO speed on the BX is a standard 540 RPM's .... and a four foot brush cutter is about the right size for a 20 horse tractor.

Both sound like sensible choices.

Looking for a tractor to bring in maybe 10-15 acres of hay, but manouverable enough to be able to actually use the loader for getting horse manure and plowing the driveway.<br>

Was looking at some old tractors including Ford 3000 and 4000's, couple others with this horsepower (mostly gas). One of the problems is that you can't even see the bucket from your seat for most old tractors with this much HP. They still run $5000+ at the used farm equipment dealer.<br>

He also has a JD2040 with a 40 HP diesel, nice loader, 3 point hitch (one of the newest ones there). Now this one you can actually see the bucket. Of course he is asking $10,900 for it. Compared to the other old ones, it appears that my wife many actually be able to drive this one?<br>

Not looking to spend much, but willing to spend $10K for something that will last and perfor the function as opposed to $5K for something that will not really fit the bill.<br>

I think the ease and value on resale depends a lot on where you live. If you're in a rural area you'd probably do better with the 4310, but if you're in an area with 1-2 acre residential lots the small frame machines would probably move faster. Hard to tell from here. You can always sell it long distance but the buyer pool shrinks then.

They sell ditching plows which are common on farms for making (ususally) emergency ditches to drain flooded fields.

It is easy to reproduce the same thing with a rear blade turned to an extreme angle so that it slits rather than scrapes. If it is done repeatedly in both directioons it will quickly make a suitable ditch.

I found the link (below) and one thing that's important is the pump must be fully submerged for best life. It is rated for continuous or intermittent operation, but limited to 10 evenly spaced starts per hour. Bearing life is 30,000 hours, so check your wiring and controls. Is the basin it is in is too small?<br>
Perhaps the float or pressure switch is sticking or improperly set, causing over-heating.<br>

That could sure do it--especially combined with inadequate rear weight or too much rear weight and fast speeds on rough ground. I wonder how the bolt extraction is going?

I never did put that intended plow on and I won't do it now. I also have a 18 ft, 12,000GVW trailer that I pull my machine around with. My machine with hoe attached is somewhere around 7200 lbs. I also have pulled AndyMA's from the other net, who has a fully loaded TN75D with hoe, cab and a million other things he has added. His machine is just over 9000 lbs, so for me the 4:10's work. I would think that (occasional)towing, the 3:73 would do OK. IF I knew it would be massive highway miles more than anything else, I would go with 3:55's. For me , this isn't the case. At 4:10's and a very hilly area that I live in, 16.9 MPG is what I average. Once, with a serious tail wind, I got 25 on the Mass pike. I can, and do often get 20. - 21 on long interstate runs. This, is not pulling the trailer though..

Sounds like the pieces came together and that's good. Hope something here triggered your thinking.

The connector must have been acting like a check valve. A cylinder can't move much if either hose is blocked. The several times I haven't seated a quick-connect the bucket would sort of jump one way and do nothing the other. One hose would end up pressurized of course that would be the one I'd take off trying to figure it out. Well, most people know about the aggravations of trying to reconnect an ordinary quick-connect when a hose is pressurized. I've had my share.

It's a bit strange that the loader always stopped in the same place. Strange or not, I've learned to take my solutions where I find them and not worry much about the why for's.

I'd just like to chime in a mention that I too used to have an old WheelHorse (like burtalm) and it was a good little garden tractor, but a world apart from my BX. The kubota is longer, wider, heavier, has bigger tires, more engine, a better turning radius (believe it or not), 4WD, and most importantly a 3PH. It's wider track makes it much more stable on a slope. I take it places that I wouldn't dare have taken the old WheelHorse (keeping in mind or course not to get overconfident with the 4WD capability). I really couldn't imagine mowing a lawn with anything much bigger though. A field or a large open backyard maybe, but up around the house anything bigger than a BX is overkill.
