I think of 4wd drive as almost essential for a compact. Compacts just don't have the weight or rear tire size to get enough traction to do even moderate ground-engaging work without 4pd. 4wd also improves stability on hills, adds a bit of braking and provides ability to divide ballast used to increase traction. I put weight in the bucket when using box scraper scarifiers to cut sod. An implement working on the ground doesn't contribute to ballast and about the only convenient way to add ballast is in the bucket.

The front to back diff Peters mentioned isn't found on compacts but one solves a problem on 4wd heavy-equipment that have long wheel-bases. In turns, the front outside tire tracks a longer distance than the rear tire. In effect it uses the built-in front axle lead when turning. Too sharp a turn and the front axle quits pulling unless there's a diff in the front drive shaft. That sort of thing is interesting to me, but it's not really a problem that has to be solved for compacts.

We were having a bon fire in my backyard for our church teenager's group. My next door neighbor is the assistant fire chief, so I asked him if they would bring an engine and brush truck mainly for the kids to look at and if things got hairy. The only problem is I couldn't get the fire going. The firefighters brought a gas powered blower and the fire went up like nobody's business. I guess firefighter's know how to start as well as put our fires too!!!

Thanks Keith. I missed your post on the ehydro discussion. I figured I couldn't contribute much to the subject. I do know that digital equipment can be fussy about its connections and glad the wiring solved your problems. Something else to go into our collective info bank here.

I guess KA would have worked better for a guess. Sounds like you've has a screen name longer than I have and I remember Bit Net. Well, I suspect that a '60's SAC communications system some of my barrack mates worked on was an even earlier version.

I just found and purchased a mf-10 lawn tractor with a plow disc rake mower and snow blower. It runs well has great turf tires and chains. I actually got this just for the snowblower my driveway is about 600 feet long. Are there parts available and possible a manaual for this cool machine. Whats it worth, it's been indoors all of it's life and looks and runs like showroom. I need to figure out how to hook up everything. I am guessing I can use the machine in my garden some as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

oh aw UNIMOG The worlds most univeral truck. Nothing comes close that is stock. Most customs can't match it etheir. I have seen a lone unimog drag out a jeep and hummer at the same time. thanks god for those 20 gears. They can dig out a city from snow and then go fight a fire, then mow the grass, then place telephone poles, and more. I swear to god i will have an unimog. The news one start at $75000. Used U models get $20000 and up even if 20 years old.

I have never jacked up my trailer either. Partly because I am too lazy to do it and partly because it seems to be more trouble than it is worth since you need to replace tires every 5 years.

You got a sweet deal. I did some looking and this was the best price I could find on a Agracat 2920 (254 in JM language) w/FEL by about a grand. Yea the warranty thing was a concern but all of the good reports, including yours (and thanks much for them), seemed to minimize it somewhat. You're right, if I could pick up a year of parts/labor for a couple of hundred I'd do it with a smile.

This weekend is the big day...if my nephew is available with his trailer!

Well I have come to the conculsion that it is a good tractor at a bad price. I searched the web nationa wide and found that in 1999 brand new they listed at 12600. Every used one I found with similar options, mainly 4x4 and FEL asking or sold price was between 8700 to 9800. If you added the tille or Snow blower they got up to 12000. Plus it is not HST and I think I am going to have to go with HST in order for my Wife to be able to play with it as well. So it looks like I am back to new or used Blue/Red green or orange. Thanks for all the feedback and good advice.

Mark likely can fill in all the details of what's available. Seems like many people are happier with HST than gears and maybe the dealer is nudging you in the direction that works for most of his customers.

If you're interested in gears you might ask the dealer to be a little more specific about what is meant by sloppy and how many hours does it take to get this way. Off the top of my head, sloppy could mean hard to shift, grinds or pops out of gear. There may be other things that qualify as sloppy.

For comparison of gear TX's, I'd look at whether there's synchromesh--especially on reverse gears, how many ranges it has and whether there's live pto. I don't know whether features such as glide shift and power reverse are available. These features are nice but many people who have gears without them get their work done just fine.

Just curious what the application is. I do have position control but I've never used the depth lock feature. I think of plows as the usual reason for wanting to set the same depth but it possibly would be useful for tillers and mowers as well. I don't have any of those and just getting the top-link adjustment right and giving the 3ph enough float to follow the ground contour works OK for me.

You might take a look at TISCO. I think they make ready-made top links and maybe tilts too. I don't have their site address saved but a search should find them. Most any two-section power-beyond valve of appropriate flow rating would work if installed in the loader valve's PB line.

It's feasible to put together a do-it-yourself kit from mail order parts but it's probably easier to let a dealer put one together. You'd have to be clear on the cylinder lengths, diameters and ends.

I used the loader the past several days. I hope the gravel freezes pretty soon so I can switch over to the blower. I'm always out of practice this time of year. In trying to get a good thin layer of pack I always dig a couple of short divots and then have to dump the bucket and back-drag to fill them in. There's no good way to get the blower into action much sooner on gravel far as I know.

My skid shoes sink into the gravel and the blower is pretty well useless until freeze-up. Some blowers have wide skid shoe options. If I really felt hard-done I could weld some plate onto the shoes but the loader works well enough so I don't bother. Last year on 7 Dec some people were taking snowmobiles onto shallow lakes. Sure isn't going to happen this year.

I do not own one yet. I have test driven both the hydrostat and the manual. I got a good price on one today. Personally I like the manual better than the hydro. You can feel the difference in power, the extra $1000 bucks I save will be good too.

IT DEPENDS ON A LOT OF THINGS... LOCATION, THE CONDITION OF THE MACHINE, PAINT, CLUTCH, TIRES, SEAT, HAS A TREE FALLEN ON IT? OR A TRAIN HIT IT,BLA, BLA,BLA. CERTINALLY THE FRONT END LOADER WILL RAISE THE VALUE... QUITE A LOT IN THE MARKET HERE IN NORTH TEXAS.

There's a very long list of things we CANNOT put on our units according to the contract.

Chains of ANY kind are at the top of that list.

Some of the other no-no's are back-up alarms, rigid plow blades (sprung only), revolving beacons (strobes only), and rear facing white lights unless the vehicle is actually moving in reverse.

They will however pay for a tow truck if we get stuck.
