If you want to minimize tread bar marks on your lawn, it is tough to beat turf tires. They don't do all that bad in reasonable amounts of mud and soft ground. Chains are expensive and somewhat of a pain in the butt to install and remove. I had a set on a Cub 154 Lo Boy. I just did the best I could with the turfs and left the chains alone. R-4 tires are a good compromise between the two. They don't do as well as either in their respective categories but do pretty well across a broad range of applications. The wide bars and width of the R-4's don't leave much of a mark but are not best in mud but much better than turfs. If the great percentage of your use will be on turf, go with turfs but expect to pay a hefty price for a good set of chains for occasional use if needed. I stored my chains in a 5 gal. bucket which I poured motor oil in to keep the chains from rusting. I have R-4's and am very happy with their performance.

Trees.....yep I have been cutting them all summer, since the ice storm destroyed half my yard. Hard hat, chaps, ear protection and kevlar gloves always accompany me. I attended a two day course at work on the subject as well. All I can say is that you must expect and plan for the unexpected, and then it is still dangerous. I had intended to rent a bucket this week to top the larger ones that are damaged prior to felling them but due to the excess rain and winds canceled the project. What amazes me is that a complete idiot can buy the most dangerous tool on the market without attending a safety class yet we register our guns or make them impossible to purchase. I suppose in the long run the chainsaw brigade is less of a threat to an oppressive government than a shotgun brigade :>.

I bet you are going to Antietam Tractor aren't you? I talked with Justin Reed and he was great. They offer free delivery, but with the difference in Maryland and WV sales tax, I saved $200 picking it up myself. I tried sending you an e-mail, but it was returned. I live on Ridge Road. You are more than welcome to take a look at the B-7800 that I have.

Is it 4WD and what year model is it? They were made from 1986 to 1997. I would like to know what was done with this tractor to tear up a set of tires in 425 hours?

I have a set of front facing John Deere work light in pic # 8. I have since mounted a set of rear facing worklights which mount to the inside area of the rops bar right behind the seat. You could probably order the kits and install them yourself and save a few buck unless your deal is installing them for free. The lights are a BIG help when working at dusk and dark trying to get that last bit of cutting work in. They are also nice when my buddies bag a deer and come to the house to see if I can get it for them with the FEL. ;-) Got about 20 lbs. of venison for my trouble last time.

I need a favor from someone out there who has access to a 723 loader. Mine is 3 hours away from me right now and I need a measurement of the distance separating the two main lift arms at a point close to the bucket pivot point. The measurement doesn't have to be exact, possibly center to center with +- 1/2" accuracy (I just need clearance). I'm fabricating an attachment and measured everything but the separation distance. <br>

Chalk up some chick appeal for the orange guys!!! ;-) Maybe the greem M&M Theory needs another look? You did exactly what I would have done were I in your shoes. I have seen exactly what you are talking about at some Deere dealers. The arrogant attitude chases customers away. You still got a real nice tractor from and dealer that sounds like he will work with you.

I've got one of the screw type log splitters. Mine's the Unicorn, fits on a tractor 3 point hitch. Mine also uses an attached arm to resist the rotation. I would never, ever, use one that simply attaches to the wheel of my vehicle. There's a tremendous amount of torque involved in splitting the logs. I've had it stall the tractor several times when splitting large logs. I've also had it take a log and tear it apart on the arm that prevents spinning, leaving me a nice chunk of wood to get off the auger screw. Then there is the danger of moving a piece of wood up against that auger and not getting tangled in it yourself. I've come close a few times.

The units work, but are spooky. I'd only use a 3 point hitch type.

John I rent a 3ph broadcast spreader for stoff like fertilizer. If you try that for lime it probably won't work usless you get some really dry lime delivered.

For grass seed I use a hand held broadcast spreader and have the wife follow me with seed and stuff in bucket. Does not take long to do thak way.

Lime I'd check with local ag store they have equipment ussually no charge and they will fill it with what you need and explain how to use.

I just completed this work yesterday. I worked up the ground with a standard rigid harrow. I currently have four acres but only worked up an acre as the remainder has vegetation on it to prevent erosion. I will work the rest up next spring. I sowed wheat and a mixture of rye to hold the soil from erosion. A spring tooth harrow will probably do a better job but I had no access at this time. I will complete a more thorough job in the sping as I will have additional settling due to new home rconstruction. I have found a place that will rent a seeder and pulviriser. I have a 4210 JD to pull it. Hope this helps you.

I talked to the dealer today & he basically mentioned all that has been posted. Guess my next step will be to ensure the cooling system is working. Then it will either be a sensor problem or that the thermostat is stuck open. Either way i won't be able to do anything til this weekend. Thanx for the help. I'll let you know what i find out..

I'm torn between a 4115 and a 4310...I'm considering attachments very similar to yours. Are you happy with the performance of the 4115 or do you wish you had gone bigger??
I will using a backhoe for some foundation work, digging a drainage ditch and the loader for gravel driveway upkeep and landscaping...
Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

I've got a 90HP New Holland, but you bring up some important points. Maybe it's intended more for a 4" tree. I'm pretty far from Texas, so I don't know what land clearing jobs are like there. If I ever get it mounted I'll use it on sumacs, popple and similar fast growing trees. Thanks for your thoughts.

I was like you and didn't like the power loss on paper with HST, but after I drove one, I bought the HST. I have a DT tractor before my HST and when I was mowing, I could go faster than 5th gear but 6th gear was too fast. With the HST I can slow to go over heavy stuff and speed up over the lighter stuff, but the key is that I am constantly moving not stopping to change gears. I have found that with my HST that I haven't noticed a difference in power. It has had plenty of power for everything that I have wanted to do.

Resale values are different depending on where you go. If you have a strong dealer in an area his make will have the best resale value. If you have to go 300 miles to find a dealer, he could have the best product but the value is lowered do to the distance if brand #2 is right there. It takes more than one dealer to make a product have higher resale value.
