Thought I would post this reply email I got back from John Deere for anyone who had any questions about who make JD oil and what it is suitable for use in. Note that John Deere oil it NOT API licensed because they refuse to pay for the priviledge. Can't say I blame them for that. This question arose over on the TDR website about who made their oil. Though perhaps you all may be interested in John Deere's reply.<br>

Without more info. such as 4WD or not, type trans., etc. either a dealer or sending an email through the John Deere website with this question is probably your best bet. I have sent them questions before. It takes them a while to get you an answer but they do answer back.

Actually if you don't have long distances to cover the electric is superior in a lot of ways, plus with an electric cart you have the option of 4 wheel drive, yup, I said FOUR WHEEL DRIVE.

They have one of these things at the marina in FL I frequent, they use it for moving & launching boats and general run-around chores in the yard. Unbelievable power, the factory motor is in the neighbourhood of 3hp, the aftermarket unit is 11+ hp, BIG difference.

The modified electric units will do 20 mph, and have a nearly 30 mile range on a single charge.

BTW, they are UNSURPASSED for hunting, you can get so close to game before they even know you're there it's incredible, one of the fellows here complains constantly about almost getting run over by deer coming the other way, or coming over a hill and a herd standing in the middle of the trail. Around my house you can get so close to the wild turkeys before they move off you almost have to bump them to get them off the trail.

Chances of finding a ROPS for this tractor outside of a dealer are spotty at best. If a deal cannont help you. You may have to go to a tube bending shop and have them fabricate a ROPS for you. Bear in mind that due to liability issues, they may be hesitant to do so unless you specify a design and sign a release. A good welding/machine shop should also be able to make a good solid ROPS as well. Maybe some of the others on the board will jump in with some ideas. Just did not want to see your post go unanswered.

To my knowledge, I don't think any of us have a 4000 Ten Series tractor with an epower reverser. This post has been sitting for a good while and I did not want to see it go unanswered in some way. A buddy of mine sells John Deere equipment and tells me that most folks opt for the ehydro mainly for it simplicity and ease of use. Customers of his who get the epower reverser are Ag farmers and users who primarily use the tractors for front loader duty and backhoe applications. On the 4310 the ehydro is a $2400 option and $1200 on the 4410. Many customers do not have a demanding use for ehydro and the epower reverser offers a big savings for them. I like the ehydro especially for very slow creeper drive type use with the pto tiller and moving my boats and trailers around in tight spaces. For mower and brush hog duty, the epower reverser would do just fine. Alot is also just plain old personal preference. If you haven't already, demo each type of transmission and see for yourself which suits you best. Even though I am not an epower reverser owner, hope this was of some help.

This one isn't sounding good and I hope the tractor is under warranty.

My Ford 1710 is sort of a distant uncle to your TC. I don't know how similar the TX's are but mine is forward to disengage. Once out of engagement, the lever pretty much has free-travel back and forth from the engagement point to full forward. I tend to engage mine at idle rpm and if it's reluctant, I 'tickle the clutch.' If it's still cranky and I'm in 4wd, I lift the front wheels with the loader. If it continues to be cranky I know it's time to adjust the clutch linkage. I have a two-stage clutch and live PTO but no mid-pto. PTO's shouldn't have to be forced to engage them.

All of this doesn't do you much good now. As far as I know the travel on a gear pto lever should be pretty free and if it never was it probably always had a problem. Some of the linkage on mine would be accessible without a major tear down but a split is required if the problem is something like bent shift rails. As far as I know there is nothing to adjust on my PTO linkage.

I've not heard of any types of major problems or even minor problems that the machines might have. They do seem to be quite well built. I would think that depending on the type of use and the maintenece given the unit would have a lot to do with your success.

Sounds like the project idea is well in hand. I'm just rambling on now. Most structures around here that are that old are log buildings built on top of logs that just lay on the ground. The just float on the frost and of course the floors aren't real level, but they do last longer than more modern structures built under code. Frost is a killer of foundations in unheated buildings. Piers or Alaska slab on grade is better but codes get in the way. The log on log idea won't work for a very tall building though.

I guess that when it's time to replace rotted logs it's done when the log will still support the building. Just jack up each end of a log, push a new one in beside a rotted one and push the old one out. I used to rent 40-acres of cedar bush down south that had an old cabin on it about the size of your barn. It was logs on logs construction and about 70-years old. It could have used some new logs though and I had to plane the bottom off the door to get in one spring. It's probably still standing. I guess it could be leveled by choosing logs of the right diameter and taper.

Tim, to me I say all tractors are good. Just some are better than others. Spend a little time looking at some of the ownership discussions here and I think you might find out a lot on the ownership and what to expect. What size Kubota do you have now?

There's some discussion about weight box construction in the archives. One of the ideas is that concrete filled ones aren't adjustable but sand ones are. I guess a combination of the two might be pretty good. On oversized box with enough concrete for minimal counter-weighting and space for sand for heavier work. The space would be useful for carrying tools most of the time. Pipe stubs for old weight plates is another idea, but most of these ideas take some welding. I haven't had my welding stuff together in years, but my box scraper works great most of the time. I can always tie sandbags onto the top of the scraper if more weight is needed.

The difference between wheel and 3ph weight is that 3ph weight changes the balance of the tractor but wheel weight doesn't (unless the rear wheels come off the ground that is). 3ph weight makes steering lighter but wheel weight doesn't. I suppose there could be situations doing very heavy loader work where the 3ph counter-weight needed to balance appropriate for the loads would produce a very nose light tractor in between loads.

The tire manufacturer is the one that needs to be contacted. The dealer can do that for you and should handle it for you. The tire company might have a stronger dealer for them in your area and he might be the one to come out. I would wonder what the other tires pressure might be? With the tear that you described I might wonder if it was not punctured by a root. I've not had to replace any of the turf tires on the BX yet to say there is a problem with them.

Ken's answer is good by me as a dealer. My prefered way to sell is to have enough profit that I would give you a new shirt if perchance you might get yours dirty while doing a scheduled task. I like to have everything covered during warrantee, but that is me. When my wife bought a new car this summer after the negotioations for the car we went for oil changes and maintence during the warrantee. We do have people that want lower prices and I don't always give. All to often customers have told me how much they know which has later kicked me in the butt as I was the one who didn't provide for them. Ask them, look at some of my old posts for things to look or bargin for.

I leave the pressures in my occasionally used trailer tires pretty high and I have wondered how high the pressure may go on hot sunny days. I suspect that it'd be better to let it sit with low pressures and then top them up for the load I'm going to carry. No real need to run near max pressures for light loads. It would even be better for me to keep them out of the sun.

I don't know what type of belts the old tires had. This summer there was a lot of blasting along the highway near our camp. We got a few chunks of old tires form the blasting mats in our yard. Most were steel belted and I remember noticing that the exposed belting seemed rusted. Huge amounts of salt are used on the highways around here. I don't know if that's an issue for old steel belted tires, and I don't know the life of an old tire used in a blasting mat. Something to think about.

The Fords are hard to get parts for too and expensive.
Get yourself a decent Ford 2000. It's a much better built machine and Parts are cheap and plentiful.
