I just recently traded my one year old NH for a larger supposedly new 2000 model. The dealer doesn't have in stock the one I want, but he says no problem I can get one. So I have delivered my tractor and signed the contract with the new trator serial number on it. Friday he gets my new tractor in from another dealer, well guess what it's an unsold 1999 model and looks awful, the tires have already dry-rotted some. I am not going to accept it, I traded for a 2000 model not a 1999 model. Has anyone else had this trouble?

For the difference in the initial investment, I would have a Kubota dealer get you the correct OEM mower. Nothing against Woods or any other manufacturer, but not only will the mower fit correctly, the future resale of your machine will be enhanced if the Kubota mower is on there. Plus, my experience as a dealer has been that you should be able to buy the Kubota mower for close to the same money as a Woods belly mower. If you want to save a little money, buy a rear mount finishing mower from Landpride, Woods, or a less expensive manufacturer. However, I prefer the mid-mounts. E-mail me if you have any questions.

The dealers in northern Illinois don't get near that price of $16,500. The prices that Quigley posted seemed to be in line with I see here in Illinois.

Not familiar with palmettos but tree pulling/removal can be very difficult.

If the root systems are weak enough you could potentially use the breakout hydraulics on the loader to lift the trees. If that does not work the chain damage that you would have caused to the trunk will kill the trees. Wait a year after dying and then pull them. Dried tree roots tend to be brittle and much easier to pull/remove.

Its difficult to recommend a size tractor for you without knowing more. Many times it is best to size the tractor not for the initial job of cleanup, but rather for the maintenance work. You could always rent a specialized piece of equipment for a weekend or two to do the initial removal and pocket the difference. ($750 to rent vs an additional $5000 to buy oversized equipment) Of course it can be more fun to buy and play and maybe even have some extra weekend-for-hire work.

Synthetic oils are great, in fact too great to use in a new piece of machinery. Synthetic oils reduce wear so much that parts do not properly break-in or wear off any "rough" machined edges, piston rings don't set properly, etc.

Typically the recommendation is to wait until 100 to 150 hours before using synthetic.

I'm in the same boat as you with a new machine and will have to change to a lighter weight oil for the winter and then next year change again to synthetic once the proper hours are accumulated. Its a bother but the extra work now will be well worth it down the road.

Congrats on the new machine!

Love that supersteer, not many people get it and I don't understand why. Thought it was one of the best reasons to get a NH Boomer. Love it on my TC40D. You are right about 4WD lock will cause the wheels to tear grass but when used on auto (great transmission) you will get the traction you need, when you need it, thus saving the grass.

If you like your NH as much as I like mine you'll be looking for any excuse to get out and play.

Look forward to seeing your new owner comments.

Have a TC40D and the NH loader is properly sized for the unit. Move pull bucket loads of CA6 gravel and heaping buckets of clay with no problem. That previous post must have had a leaking hydraulic unit, low RPMs, or maybe the JD loader reacts differently than NH loaders do.

The price/package you mentioned seems pretty good. If you like the unit, go for it!

This weekend I tried to start my JD 4400. Outside temp was about 50 degrees. I hit the heater for about 10 seconds. It turned over VERY slowly for about a second and then kind of chattered. I released it and tried again. Same thing. Charged the battery but it was not discharged. Then it started. Any thoughts anyone?

When lifting 3 pt implements on or off a trailer, I tie the implement to an adjacent tree to limit swing. I like to move the trailer rather than the implement withthe tractor.
To load I lift the implement and back the traier under it. To unload, I lift and drive the trailer away, then drop.
With smaller tractors' its to easy to damage the front end with swinging implements.

I have found this very interesting. I did not order a tractor, mail order. I went to a place I could go back to "EYE-TO-EYE" and yell (If I have to) about... When I bought a pressure washer My friends told me what a great deal at the tractor supply or hyds place and wally world etc.(now one of them is broke and can not get parts, someone else mentioned this also) they also told me gas bigger better etc... I got my yellow pages checked local dealers and the line they have. When to the internet sites and checked those. Called the local dealer for a demo and what they as proffessionals thought I would need. Bought a Hotsy with 110V. More money, better warranty, better service, more satistfaction... I use it on every thing house, deck, lawn mowers, tractors, tractor trailer and cars. Bottom line ask a expert and buy what you want or need. One thing gas engines need maintence. Electric plug in and go no fus no muss... Enjoy shopping

Curtis Cabs (www.curtisintl.com) builds aftermarket snowplow units for loader frames. Have seen them used mostly on paved surfaces for small to medium sized areas. Where I live (Northwest New Jerssey) most driveways are stone (3/4" to 1 1/2") based and beat pretty good on the moldboards. Not to mention plowing off all the stone onto the sides. Most Compact Tractor owners mount a rear blade on the tractor and move most of the snow off that way. If it gets too bad, we just swing around and use the loader bucket to move the snow like any other material. One problem everyone hates is when your snowrows freeze and plowing off fresh snowfall over the snowrows gets very difficult. With the loader still on you can always cut the snowrows back

Larry, I would guess that the reason that the mid PTO does not slow as suddenly as the rear is probably due to the fact that it is turning a lot faster. Maximum 2150 rpm vs. 580 rpm. I haven't had opportunity to use my mid pto yet. I would think it would be like stopping a car or truck. The faster your speed the longer it takes to stop. I would also reason that the longer the braking is applied before coming to a complete stop,the faster the friction material would wear down. The overruning clutch seems like a good idea to me and I will eventually get one for use with my cutter and tiller. Your definately right that this has no bearing on why the engagement lever is hard to move on the 4300.

Hello. I am interested in any input concerning the Power-Trac line of equipment, in particular, the 400 series. I am not sure if they have other buckets available or not, as I stated in another post, these prices are for material kits, they have to be welded by the buyer. They may build custom buckets, give them a call.

Greg & Norm, Thanks for your good information. I've been using additives but didn't know lubrication was part of the reason. I don't think DEE-ZOL+ is available in Califonria (more regulations) but I'll find a good one. I also found out these new California regulations will not affect compact tractors (off road diesels under 175 HP) -- whew! Sometimes it makes me want to move east. Thanks again for your help. JonB

On the old Kubota's they had a decompression lever on them same as some other tractor makes. Check it out and see if that is working or not. On all the older tractors bar none cold weather starting was not one of there better points. A diesel needs to get turning fast to start. The lever that controls that comes out the front of the valve cover and has a cable that goes to the upper left of the dash. For cold starting you do need the glow plugs and you need to pull that lever so the engine can release the compression and turn over fast enough.

I'm a Texas boy and I really admire you northern types who are willing to get on a tractor in below 25 deg weather but sitting on one in 105 degrees is no fun either. Any low viscosity natural oil should help as would a $10 engine block heater. You know, the type that magnetically attaches to the pan and plugs in to the mains. I've been told that one of the problems with switching to low viscosity synthetics in older machinery is that it can lead to oil burning and leaks. Don't know how true that is as I've used synthetics in mine since it was new.
